Nobody has ever been prosecuted for ripping their own DVDs for their own use that they kept and didn't sell.bizzy_lizzie wrote: »Doh, I don't want to do something illegal, back to square one.
Thanks for giving me so much to google!
I've been watching DVDs that I've ripped (and own) for over 11 years and its great not having to faff with a DVD player.
Have a read of this guide if you do decide to go ahead.

The laws around dvd "ripping" for personal use is not criminally enforced. More likely to be civil rather than legal action (police have better things to do that arrest people for ripping DVD's they own).
I've had my media centre stolen once (had over 200 of the DVD's i owned ripped to it.) when i told the police they basically said "Don't worry we don't care about what movies and music on it unless we get a specific request from the copyright holders. That is unless it's 'child' related."
They recovered my media centre (plus drives) 3 months later, (smart water tagging to the rescue!) never heard anything from them about the contents.
Think as long as you're not ripping and then burning them to DVD's again and selling them at the local market the police won't bother about it. ^_~Laters
