soft search vs hard search

Hi,
Just a little confused. How much use is a soft search and how does it compare to a 'hard' search? I understand that a soft search doesn't leave a mark on your credit file but how much information can be gleaned by a lender from just carrying out a soft search? Is it the same amount of information that they would see if they carried out the 'hard' search?
cheers
