@DCFC79 Thank you for commenting, I appreciate you taking the time to answer my questions, I feel a lot better about it. The shop floor I do find quite cold but that might be just because I'm very sensitive to cold, but I do have a nice fleece in my uniform pack and I can wear layers :)

I was only given one of the polo shirts though. can you request another one? or do you have to be there for a certain amount of time to earn 2? as the shifts I'm working are all in one slot and it may be difficult to find time to wash until my day off, especially without a tumble dryer, also worried in case I spill something on it in the morning just before I have to go to work :/

I cant remember what the temperature of the chiller is but its not Arctic cold (yes I guess it is cold) and same for the shop floor but moving around helps, not sure if closing and stretching your fingers would help.

re the uniform how many hours you doing a week ? Eg im do 20 hours a week and i have 2 polo shirts, 2 pairs of trousers and 1 fleece. You can ask for another polo shirt. Maybe put the polo shirt on after you have eaten your cereal say.

When you get to know the store etc keep an eye out for overtime on say grocery/dry goods and put your name down (gets you out of the cold ).

    Good luck

    ps.
forget the notebook, ive not come across any equipment with a security coded number well ok theres 2 bits of equipment you need a number for which are the clock in machine and if different is the number to log on to the checkout.

Hi everyone :) thought I'd give some feedback regarding my experiences of my first day day and the till training.

First day - I went in and found someone immediately. My clocking in number wasn't working properly so I couldn't clock in but it has been sorted now, so today when I clocked in it worked fine and they assured me that the hours I worked when I didn't clock in had been added.

Basically I was taken to the aisle where I was working, and there another colleague helped me, and told me about my role, and gave me jobs and monitored me throughout the day.

Also I got my gloves, and I cancelled the order of the gloves I bought from ebay, so no money outta my pocked :) They actually offered me gloves :) and I now have 2 shirts :)

Till training - My role isn't checkout, but all staff have to be till trained. I clocked in, and reported to HR I then we went on a till and went through everything for a couple of hours not serving anyone, then paperwork, then break :P Then I observed another colleague for about 5 - 10 minutes (but only because I requested this cause I've never worked in a supermarket before) Then I swapped with the colleague and he supervised me for a little bit. Then I was put on a till on my own and served for about 2 hours.

It was alright, I did tend to make mistakes though when I started to panic. but the you could call supervisors and they would be straight over and all the customers were very understanding :)

Questions though regarding till training, and till work in general.

    - What happens if you do make a big mistake but don't realize? Say like you give the customer too much change (as that is something I didn't like the change prompt didn't stay on screen very long, but referring to reciept did help). or what if say you think a payment went through but it didn't? and basically you loose money for the company?

I don't think I made any mistakes I was quite diligent and tried my best to fully concentrate on each sale, but with the rush it is understandable to miss stuff especially with change @___@

    Thanks again guys x

Thanks for coming back to let us know how you got on. Glad it's going ok for you :)

Regarding mistakes on the till, they happen. All you can do is concentrate, be careful and follow the instructions on the screen. I used to find saying what I was doing out loud would help e.g. "So that came to £21, you've given me £30 and your change is £9 here you go". If you think you may have made an error, inform your supervisor straight away so they are aware and can do any checks etc.
  • @southend1 No problem, everyone's advice really helped me hopefully me sharing my experiences may help someone else :)

Yeah :) With the change I would look at the screen and get the number for the change and dive straight into the till to get the change, then would just double check on the receipt and then would kind of re count the money as I handed it back to the customer :)

I tended to get most stressed though at the start when I was first put on the till and a few of the other collegues were fussing around the till like one was emptying the vouchers etc. and took the payment and missed some items on the belt. but it was ok, as I said customers were very understanding.

Is there consequences for making mistakes though like the change, to my knowledge I didn't make mistakes but how knows I'm a worrier so I worry a lot lol like if you gave the customer a £20 instead of a £10, it's easy to do especially with the rush and alot of info to take in, or with the prompts with the cash when it asks how much they gave you you pressed the wrong one and it gave the wrong change value, because the till would be short? or would it just be if you continued to do it you would be fired? and would they kind of take you to one side and tell you did wrong?

I don't think I'll be on the till very often as I'm only in 4 hours each shift and the job I have been assigned will take that long, but obviously with overtime etc. It's a pretty straightforward system, with prompts all the way, it's just with money you have to be very careful

    Thanks x

If you follow company procedure to the letter it should be fine. If not you may find yourself on a disciplinary. Where I worked we had to arrange meetings with staff who had a till discrepancy and retrain where necessary. If there was any suspicion of something dodgy we would review CCTV footage etc and monitor the employee closely for a period after the discrepancy. I'm sure the company understands the odd mistake happens but if it is more than that or you do anything you shouldn't you may well end up losing the job.

Anyway don't stress I'm sure you'll be fine. And like you say you won't be on the till all the time :)

It's not easy to give wrong change if you don't put the tendered amount till the transaction is ended

Customer gives you £30 for £21.18. You leave the £30 until you have counted the £8.82 into the customers hand, given the receipts and wished them a lovely day

When I worked for JS small mistakes were part and parcel. However a shortage of a note( £5 and up) unless you could explain it, a disciplinary was started

Believe me, when working the tills a while, you will remember every transaction and know if you made a mistake

It was your first day so mistakes are likely to get made.

If a payment didnt go through eg a card payment then you will get a screen prompt saying " card/transaction declined ", just ring the buzzer for the supervisor if that happens.
  • I have friends and relatives that work for Sainsburys and they cannot go without wearing leggings or tights under uniform, a top under the uniform (plus a vest if its freezing outside) - just make sure it does not show on the neckline area. Plus you can wear fingerless gloves. They need to be fingerless as you can handle the money better and fingered gloves don't work on self scan.

Some stores allow you to wear a black or dark red scarf. Ask colleauges that have been with Sainsburys for a while about wearing scarves. Cannot wear them working on the counters.

I wear my own clothes for work in a call centre. I only put on what I am going to wear 10-15 mins before I go to work. I just wear my PJs or some 'dossing about' home clothes before hand.
