Can JSA be stopped for 6months

Please can someone advise me re my son:

My 20yr old son has learning disabilities , he wants to work and was receiving JSA. He had a letter saying he had to go to job club,he cant read and I didnt get to see it ,so he didn't attend. He benefit was stopped and we tried to appeal. He has called me just now to say that ,the job centre said his benefits have been stopped to Christmas.

Is this possible ? or could he have misunderstood ?
Thank you for reading.

  • JSA can be sanctioned if you fail to follow a reasonable instruction.

Are the JCP aware of his inability to read? How is he applying for jobs?

Thank you for your reply, normally I help out with his paperwork, they know he has limited skills ,which makes all this seems so awful.

I am currently in hospital and feel at a loss as to where to go next. 16 weeks with no money ,how do they expect someone to surive .

Firstly Christmas isn't six months away!

Does the DWP know of his inability to read as that makes a big difference?

what measures have been put into place to ensure your son receives important written information whilst you're in hospital?
  • Is this the second time he has failed to fulfil his agreement? A 26 week sanction would imply it is.

He can apply for a hardship payment, which will be paid at 60% of the normal rate (or 80% if he is deemed vulnerable).

Does he not have a support worker to help him?

I do wonder if ESA would be a more suitable benefit for him. Has he ever worked?

They have just had the outcome of the appeal/ reconsideration, implying this happened a while ago.

Thank you all for your comments, I seem to have lost control over all this.

Yes they do know about his problems, and he could have had ESA but he just wants to be "normal" ,he would love a job .

I will write some letters and remind people about sam and his problems.

    Thank you all

You need to be more constructive - writing some letters is not going to help. At what stage in the appeal process is he? Who does he have caring for/ supporting him while you are not there?

I think his just lost his second appeal, he wont come to visit me has he is scared of hospitals and he has no one supporting him. Due to his autism he struggles with new people and new situation's.
Ive just been trying to do my best and I know some of his friends have help him with his appeal paper work.

Does he have a disability advisor at the Job centre to help him with things such as form-filling?

You can still look for a job while on ESA.

It could be a good idea to contact social services to get some support for him.
