Personalised Number Plate - What to do?
Hi as per an earlier post I'm in the process of researching all aspects of buying my next car and what to do with my current car - I'm a complete novice to both as my current car was my first ever car and it was my company car that I bought - so easy transaction!!
One of my questions is my current car has a personalised number plate - its nothing amazing but I have an emotional attachment to it!!
My current car is a 1998 Audi in poor condition - dents, driver seat dodgy, clutch very high up so about to go I think, stalls on cold days in first five mins of driving - so I can't see it going anywhere except scrap.
Thus, can I keep the personalised licence plate before I send the car to the scrap year and transfer it to my next car? If I do is there a cost involved?
Or alternatively thinking with my head and not my heart are there companies out there who might buy it or do I have to sell myself privately?
Cheers and thanks

You need to put the plate on retention before you scrap it
Fill in a retention document form V778 from the DVLA0 -

Or alternatively transfer it directly to the new car from the old car. You will then be given a new number for the old car which you can then scrap.
The only value a number has is what someone will offer you. In most cases that is not a lot.0 -
Make sure you get the plate before the mot runs out on your existing car or it could cost you a few bobBe Alert..........Britain needs lerts.0

Agree, you can't transfer a plate off a car that does not have a current MOT.paddedjohn wrote: »Make sure you get the plate before the mot runs out on your existing car or it could cost you a few bobIT Consultant in the utilities industry specialising in the retail electricity market.

OOh, thought it was a V317, that's the form I completed and sent off, the V317 is titled " Application to transfer or retain a vehicle registration number"
OP it costs £105 to retain the registration for 12 months , £80 of that is the transfer fee ( so if you currently own both cars then it's £80) if you wish to retain for 2 or 3 years, then its +£25 for each subsequent year but must be applied for at the time, eg 2yrs £130 3yrs £155, when you do transfer the reg there is no refund of extra years paid for.
Oh and both cars must have an MOT if they qualify for an MOT.0
