redundancy and Maternity leave

hi all, i came home to a message from my boss saying my role is falling away on the 7th october. There is no suitable alternative role for me so I have to take redundancy. I can defer my gardener leave until i intended to return to work but its up to me how long I drag it out.
I'm new to this, so does anyone know if when i start my gardeners leave (3 months on full pay) i lose my SMP? Because I know I'm supposed to be entitled to claim the full 39 wks? Also, if I decide to become a student what would that mean for my benefit entitlement? I don't want to mess this up :(
