My first credit card

Currently I spend on debit card and one of these days i'll end up getting stung with nothing like a credit card to help me out.

So as a pre-emptive measure, I best get one for shopping online!

I'll be paying everything off at the end of each month and I'm not sure if I want extra fancy stuff. Currently bank at barclays and not really too sure what to go with as its all rather confusing.

Any recommendations or advice is great

  • If you have no or little history, then your own bank would be a good place to start, as the range of Barclaycards are not particularly awful.

Also, your own bank has a better idea of your spending so will probably give you a higher credit limit.

I took out a credit card with Coop bank when I had my bank accounts with them; my credit limit dropped to £250 because I didn't use the card.

After moving my bank accounts to Nationwide, I wanted to increase my credit limit, but because the Coop couldn't see my spending, they said I'd need to use my card and wait several months before they increased it.

Nationwide, on the other hand, offered me a credit card with a £2,000 credit limit - eight times more than that on my Coop card.
