Savings without a debit card?

Hello!

Long time lurker here... Are there any savings options that don't require a debit card? Due to past bad credit/money management, I only have a basic bank account and am happy with that, much prefer to deal in cash.

I've finally got myself in a position where I can manage my budget and want to start saving, I'm not interested in shares etc and it will only be a couple of hundred a month or so, so was thinking about premium bonds, as I want the cash locked away - looked online and it looks like debit purchase only, I was looking for something to pay over the counter type thing. I'm not too bothered about the lack of interest as I don't get any with my bank account, I simply don't want the cash in a spendable place!

Thanks for reading!

Literally all "proper" savings accounts don't come with a debit card. Some have an ATM card, and one or two allow you to use the debit card associated with your current account to withdraw money from your savings account.

May be the Q you wanted to ask is whether there is a full credit check if you open a savings account only? The answer to that is 'no' - though your credit file will quite likely be used to verify your ID.
  • Thank for your reply.

Due to the nature of me with money - spending as a hobby, I need it locked away, until I need to spend it type thing. Even to have an ATM card will be no good for me. I currently don't have any debt, equally no savings at all, I live paycheck to paycheck and am luckily in a stable job, albeit on not a very good wage, but enough for me. Ideally I'd like to be able to open some sort of account, over the counter and with cash. I have necessary ID and no problems with a credit check. I remember from when I had premium bonds years ago, I was able to pay over the counter for them, seems that's changed. I shall keep thinking/looking for a solution!

An account where you have to go into a branch to withdraw.

Rubbish interest rate, but might constrain your spending habits.
  • Thanks so much! I didn't even think to look for an account like this, but it's absolutely what I need! Terrible when you get to 40 and realise how little you have, live in rented accommodation etc! (I have a rich spirit, so it's not all bad!)

Thank you again and enjoy the rest of your evening!
