I've been using no-ip for months now never had a problem with it.

Sounds like you didn't set up the dynamic update client properly! it's easy to set up as a cron job in Linux and even easier to do in windows!

I've used it for years with no problem as they normally send an email reminding me to log in. This time they didn't - just one saying it was deleted. I don't use an update client as my router handles that.

Had to laugh at this, having to log in once every 30 days, is to taxing. Then complaining how amateurish it makes you look, instead of paying about £8 a year for service which is clearly used for business use.
Had you bothered to read the thread you will see that my complaint is that they deleted the service without warning.

It's a hobby site not business - https://www.digitalham.co.uk is where the webcam and weathercam are located and the other uses are just personal.

When there are simple free services around I use them instead of paying for an overkill product I don't need regardless of cost.

I did read, you complained of how annoying they were by forcing you to log in once every 30 days. Also the free option is for personal use and low traffic, so having webcams streaming is hardly low traffic, which is more than likely why it was removed.

The main problem with manual updates is that a simple DNS facility such as mine provided by 123 is really intended for fixed IP use so the URL to IP relationship gets cached around the world's DNS servers and any change made to the definitive DNS can take hours to propagate. There appears to be no obvious way I could stop that caching which dynamic services must do.

They don't, they just update their records and wait for re-propagation.

If you need a faster updates just change the TTL (time to live) value on the DNS record to something small like 10m or 1m and it will get flushed pretty quickly, however this puts a larger load on the DNS host.

Imentioned it but put up with it as the penalty fo using a free service. What lead to me asking for recommendations for an alternative was them deleting the service without warning.

Do you even know what DNS does? It is completely irrelevant what happens once the connection is established.

I'm guessing they have a very short TTL. This is easy enough to test so I'll try it sometime.

That option is not available on the 123 control panel - probably for the reason you mention. In any case there would be the probably much longer delay before I notice that IP had changed and updated it.

Right now I've restored the no-ip service and signed up for the free D-Link one which is indeed provided by dyndns as is obvious when you set it up. While I wait to see if no-ip delete and tell again rather than warn first I'll modify my site code to pick up the url from the database instead of having it hard coded. That way I can swap between the services quickly if necessary. I can also just use a IP address directly instead of either and keep that updated automatically easily enough.

Ne need to test, just run "dig domain.tld" from a Linux terminal and the TTL is the first value after the domain name in the "ANSWER SECTION". DDNS services usually use a TTL of 60 seconds.

    ... and I can't set that.

Here is what I did do - http://www.digitalham.co.uk/web/development/dynamic-dns-woes/

I will still maintain the old no-ip and new dlinkddns for use with a tablet app, FTP and the SDR unless I just manually hard code the IP as required but I'll use my cobbled together solution for the website and my own browser access to the cameras.

I'll be interested to see what no-ip do next month.
