Domain Name Cost?

Am needing to change email address as changing ISP and am looking at a domain name as an option but am confused as to cost.

Is there an annual fee and a registration fee? Is the registration fee a one off? What sort of figure could I expect to pay?

My other option would be to get an email not attached to an ISP which would be free eg hotmail or google but do these have storage issues?

Thanks

I think I pay something like about £3 or £4 per year for every .co.uk domain I have. Anything more than that and they are overcharging.

    Edit: ukreg.com charge £3.47/year for .co.uk domains.
As for google email storage, I can't see that being a problem at it's now over 2 GiB and rising and I'm sure I recently read one online email company anounced unlimited storage.

You typically have to buy the rights to the domain name on an annual basis, prices vary from site to site.

You then have to buy a plan that services that domain name, for example gives you webspace or email services. Those are also renewed anually.

I used https://www.totalchoicehosting.com for my web site. It is possible to buy the domain form one site and the service/hosting from another. It can be cheaper that way but personally I prefer the simplicity of keeping it at one place.

You'll pay roughly $10 a year to own the domain, and the hosting plan they offer starts at $4 a month. The exchange rates t the moment make this a pretty good deal, although you can probably get cheaper hosting than that elsewhere. You do get quite a lot for your money there though.

*edit* If its just email you are after then something like a Gmail account would probably suffice. They have LOADS of storage and are free. The downside is that you have to be online to read your old emails, and you are trusting Google not to start charging for access in the future.

Also different domains cost different amounts. For example something.co.uk differs in cost from something.com and something.org

    I use One&One.

This you can forward email to your current / new ISP email address and web forward to your ISP free web space.

For about 80p extra per month you can have instant mail, this you use One&One's POP3/SMTP service.

Or go for web hosting too, this you also get pop3/smtp access, but also your website is hosted on their server for £2.38 per month.
It's PAC not PAC Code, it's MAC not MAC Code, it's PIN not PIN Number, it's ATM not ATM Machine, it's LCD not LCD Display, it's DVD not DVD disc... It's no one not noone, It's a lot not alot, It's got not gotten... Panini is the plural of panino - there is no S!!

I think Google is the best free option - with no storage issues
You can use it with Outlook / Outlook Express
and you can also check online from another computer

By the way - your old email address may continue to work after you change ISP - but set up the alternative first and advise all contacts to delete the old one.
  • If you go to Quidco under the computer seaction there is a link to a domain reg service that gives you back £3.50 for the domain, a .co.uk address costs £4 for the 2 years.
