Wow, a long list of ways to try and blame someone else, when the truth is, if he'd just bothered to open the envelope then none of this would have happened...

Yep, you are right, if he had opened the envelope then none of this would have happened.

But he didn't and it has happened so the options now are either.......

IN10 plus £300 plus 100% loaded premiums for 5 years plus maybe more trouble with the current policy and the disclosure issue

    or

Explore ways of avoiding the above and getting the OP back in the situation he would have been in if his insurer had auto-renewed as they have done for the past 8 years and as their policy T&C says they will do.

You seem to think the IN10 option is the way to go, I don't and so offered the second option for consideration

I believe you are even supposed to physically have in your car a valid certificate of motor insurance to present when needed.

Not much sympathy on this one I am afraid.

I believe you are even supposed to physically have in your car a valid certificate of motor insurance to present when needed.

Whilst it is an offence to fail to produce a certificate to police on request, there is a statutory defence (i.e. you cannot be prosecuted) if you produce it at a police station within 7 days. There is a great deal of debate about whether you still committed the offence or not if you do so.

It is always a good idea to keep the certificate in the car just in case there has been an error in the insurance database.

Home-printed certificates and electronic copies shown to police officers on a tablet, laptop, or similar, are now as valid as original paper certificates.

Putting that to one side, a motor policy is not valid as far as criminal law is concerned unless a certificate has been delivered by the insurer; even if payment has been taken and a policy schedule or document issued. The insurance certificate is 100% key.

A certificate, once delivered, can be cancelled by providing the required notice to the policyholder.

But if you don't open your post, you'll never know.;)

  • I've worked for insurance broker for 10yrs and we use auto renewals. We've also had a few complaints that for whatever reason policies weren't auto renewed but no invitation was issued. Customers weren't happy with our response so got fos involved and they found in our favour. Reason- its the customers responsibility to renew their policies not the insurer/broker. Agree with the posts on here u can easily get dummy quotes and jn fairness you won't get many calls but use a fake one they wont get ur number off ur registration number

If the OP had come on here and posted along the lines of "I made a terrible mistake and didn't bother opening letters and as a result this has happened..... lesson learned, can anyone offer any advise etc etc" then I would whole heartedly agree with you..

BUT... all the OP has done is look for ways to blame everybody else for their own stupidity, so in this case I personally have no sympathy and they deserve whatever they get.....

Nobody seems to be able to accept responsibility for their own actions anymore - it's always somebody elses fault. Sometimes a harsh lesson is exactly what people need.

    All unnecessary.

No-one coming for advice is expected to apologise for coming here.

Your posts add nothing to help the op.

If you don't like his posting style just ignore him, but complaining about him coming to mse to try and save some money just isn't justifiable.

I don't need your permission to post, just as you do not need mine.

Perhaps you should follow your own advice....
