    OK Update
I have tried again using Quidco and have some incredibly differing quotes
Admiral, Diamond and Elephant - ALL £156.11 (after cashback)
Bell from Admiral (whatever that is) - £291.25 (after cashback)
(Bell claims to be cheaper by fitting a black box to the car - but clearly ISN'T)
    Then (wait for it)
    Insurer Wise - £9538.21
and Insurer wise (2) for £10,633

    Why this huge difference ?

TBH, I don't see why an insurer should replace with a new car, I don't like insurance companies, but why should they pay the VAT that you've already thrown away?

    That's £3000 VAT on a £15000 car.

    Duuurh !!
That's the idea of insurance "to cover your losses" - supposedly in FULL !!

As already been stated, take out a GAP policy online via Quidco, for about £100 (Covers you for difference between wat insurance pay out and what the full cost of the car was if yours is written off for 3 or 4, years) then you can buy the cheap Admiral Cover and not wory about it at all (for up to 4 years).

I use ALA and would recommend them but there are other choices out there, just dont buyit from the dealer as they will triple the price go on quidco or TCB and check it out.

EG: My Fun Car (Fiat 500c Lounge Cost £15800 New). GAP Policy Cost £120 for 4 years,(£10000 Cover). That is a total cost of policy not a cost each year.

SO say my car is written off when it is 3 years old and the insurance value it at £6000 then the gap policy will pay out the £9800 to put be back in the position I was when I bought the car new

For what these policies costs they are a real no brainer on a brand newcar

    Thanks - will do that
Our dealers quoted us £300 for 3 years gap insurance (on a £15,000 new car)

How does ALA do it so cheaply - is there any problem if we did want to claim - I assume that they are covered by the insurance regulator ?

The Dealer is taking a huge markup. That will be at least 60% of the cost of the policy,..

Google ALA hand have a look at the reviews, dont really see a bad thing said, and yes they are regulated as normal. So should not be any problem

The only thing they stipulate is if the car is written off, then you need to get max amount from insurer and not just the first offer, (I asked them about this and they said you call us and we will handle the negotiations).

But all the reviews indicate they payout without hassle, and they cover your excess as well!!

As I said there are other companies out there worth shopping around, but just dont buy it through the dealer. Like every add on they sell its always less than halfthe price if you buy direct!

    Enjoy your new car.

Don't use the dealer for GAP insurance. While you are at it, don't let them sell you paint or upholstery protection either.

As said above, the dealer is making a huge commission.

I am still having problems in getting my wife insured for her new car (to be collected on Thursday)
To start with - we both need cover for both my car and her car - as "named drivers"
She is already a "named driver" on my car
When I try the same on her policy - my driving experience (30 years NCD) is not recognised - which means that I cannot even progress the policy on-line -
It is as if I don't even exist.
The only ones that work for us are Elephant, Diamond and Admiral and they don't let me buy "on-line" - requiring a phone call !!
Even Aviva won't touch us - informing us that they can't insure us - and to try TIGER.CO.UK - remember that I have just taken out a policy with quotemehappy (who ARE Aviva anyway)
For Gods sake - this is a standard small hatchback - why, what they know - that we don't ?

I have emailed my own new insurers (Quotemehappy / Aviva) to ask them why....
Even when I try adding myself on to a quote from quotemehappy - I get

"Sorry - we can't quote you.
Thanks for answering all the questions!

Based on what you've told us about yourself, your car and how you use it, we're not able to give you a competitive quote. Sorry, it's a shame that we can't include you too!

Our website is full of information about who can join us, so perhaps you might want to take a look and find out. If your circumstances change, please let us know"

You have the no claims and the NCD. She has zero no claims and you as a named driver dont need to put any no claims down.

Your only asked if you have had any accidents or incidents.

She is starting at the bottom like all new drivers, Putting her in the same category as a 17 year old with zero no claims.
Only age and length of time the licence has been held is a bonus.

    Still zero no claims.

I was just concerned that I would be covered comprehensively rather than just 3rd party - on my wifes car (which would have been the case - had I driven it on my own insurance !!)
Eventually, we used Sainsburys bank for insurance - which was a reasonable £221 (with £50 cash back) and this appears to provide New for Old car replacement with first 12 months as well....

This seems extremely low for a driver with no NCD.

I would have expected at least £600-£700 depending on her age.

If you work back from that figure someone with full 5+ years NCD would be paying only £80 ish per year ?
