Is it possible to descale inside an electric shower?

The heating element in our electric shower is playing up. It doesn't always turn on (i.e. the water just stays stone cold). Turning it off and on again, or changing the power setting and then changing it back usually resolves it, but's becoming more frequent.
The shower is only three years old. We live in an incredibly hard water area. Is it possible that this is being caused by a limescale build-up on the element?

p.s. Shower head is definitely descaled so that's not causing the problem
EDIT: Have just read a tip online - that I should try taking the shower head off and running it cold at the max pressure for ten minutes to blast some limescale through. Will try that tonight for starters...

If the heating element is scaled up, this will consistently affect how long the shower takes to heat the water. It wouldn't produce cold water one minute and then hot water the next. It seems more like a fault with the control circuitry. If my post hasn't helped you, then don't click the 'Thanks' button!0

Have you looked in the troubleshooting part of the manual that came with the shower?0
