Claiming back flight costs for holidayers with old age memory problems

I was wondering if anyone had any advice on older parents who are starting to develop memory problems and thus wasting a lot of their money!
My elderly mum was due to go on holiday but genuinely misread the fight times as am, as opposed to pm. Subsequently she missed her flights and cant be refunded the money. This is despite her telling me she knew it was a pm flight at one stage - which she has completely forgot about later.
Of course that's part of her life savings gone and now she cant afford to go again. Shes not travelling alone, I would add, but she did make the bookings.
Can travel companies be asked to refund flight costs if it can be proved there is medical evidence for some early onset problems of memory/alzheimers?
Thanks for any input!

I would doubt that the travel companies would have to pay out in a case such as the one you describe. Surely if your mum wasn't travelling alone, and has memory problems, the person travelling with her should have obtained the correct details from her beforehand and ensured that they were in time for their flight?
The only option I can think of is holiday insurance, but again, I doubt if this is covered.0 -
I'm a bit mystified by this. If your Mum thought the flight time was 7 in the morning, instead of 7 in the evening, surely she was just extremely early for her flight?
Or have I read this the wrong way round? My DH has Alzheimers, and isn't capable of making a cup of tea, let alone flight bookings!

Im with you, if the flight was 7 PM surely they found that out when they turned up for the 7AM, therefore all passengers in the booking were then aware and there was no need to miss the later flight?
Also why did'nt any of the other people on the booking check the details, surely they must of looked at or been given details beforehand?0 -
Maybe she thought it was 7am the next day instead of 7pm on that day?0

Turning up at am for a pm flight only means she got there early, unless she misread the date as well. Did she?.................
....I'm smiling because I have no idea what's going on ...:)
