Bricking up a rear door

Hello,

I want a rear door bricking up due to having French Doors installed.

I am still waiting for one quote, but have received another. The door is 2100mm x 900mm, will require external matching brickwork (easy to match bricks) and interior blockwork, then finished to bare plaster on the inside.

Quote I've had is £1,250 - I may be naive, but was expecting less than half this. I will be interested to see the second quote.

Thanks

Had an area about half that size bricked and blocked up, with insulation and plastered for £250. It was done by the same company who fitted some windows, so since they were already getting paid for a larger job this may have made it cheaper than if it been an independent job. However, the guys installing the windows didn't do it themselves, two builders (who do the building work on the company's conservatories) came and did everything except the plastering - the company's plasterer then came the next day to finish off - so it's not like them having the window job really reduced their labour costs. I would guess they just saved money on the materials instead - bricks would've been bought specially as matched existing perfectly, but only needed a few blocks and insulation was a small enough piece to be an offcut, so probably came as leftovers from one of their conservatory jobs.

Do the company (assuming you used one), that installed your french doors, also build conservatories? Maybe they could still do the job for you?

So (very) roughly, twice the size, twice the cost.

We did it ourselves, I can demolish brickwork, I've just never laid it! Always a first time.

So both of you indicate it should be what I was expecting.

I'll give an update when I get the second quote through.

    Thanks

The second quote came in at £560 - much more realistic.
