Itunes driving me nuts

Hi
Hadn't used Itunes for a while but decided to import a few CDs last night.
Logged in and discovered that
1) none of the music on my iphone was in my itunes music library, despite happily working on my phone. Taking a backup didn't make a blind bit of difference, it was over in a flash and did nothing, no new items in my music library.
2) after importing a CD, (which appeared successfully in my music library) I couldn't drag'n'drop it fron my music library onto my device, no entry sign appearing. I only discovered this after the Synch process didn't do a damn thing.
3) the only thing I could (nearly) get to work was transferring purchases where some items from 5 years ago appeared in my music library but then, as above, still wouldn't synch to phone.
What gives people? Help appreciated. Windows Vista btw.

1. How did the music that isn't in iTunes get onto your phone? Did you download it directly from the Apple Store to the phone? If so, why would you expect it to be in an iTunes library on your PC?
2 iPhones and iPods don't do copy/paste between PC and device. The Sync SHOULD copy everything from the master library on the PC to the device, or you can reset the device so that you Sync selected items - you select the device within iTunes when it's connected to the PC, and it's one of the options in there.
Failing this, there's plenty of Apple User Forums out there where this type of problem will no doubt have been covered in depth.0 -

All current music was imported from CD => iTunes using the same user account on the same laptop. None of it was downloaded from iTunes. So it should be in an iTunes library on my laptop. It certainly used to be the last time (but one) that I checked?0 -
Google confirms a few billion unhappy campers with the same issue. An Apple 'bug' then. Deliberately on purpose. I'm going back to iTunes 1.0.0
