Laptop not registering 5ghz wifi

My router broadcasts in both 2.5ghz and 5ghz. It's the VM superhub 2.

My phone sees and connects to the 5ghz network but my netbook wont.

Ipconfig says its wireless g/b/n compatible. So I assume it is capable of connecting to the 5ghz network. But it isn't there in 'available networks' and doesn't connect if I add it manually.

I know it doesn't make much difference but I'm curious as to why.

Anyone have any ideas?

Thank you.

IIRC not all N wireless adaptors can use 5ghz, the use of 5ghz frequencies is an option not a requirement for the N certification.

It's a little like some devices are N 2.4/5ghz capable, but can only use one frequency range at a time (they've only got a single radio in them).

If your netbook won't see the 5ghz signal, or connect to it but your phone does, I'm guessing you've got a 2.4ghz only adaptor (the ones that can deal with both frequencies tended to be a bit more expensive, and not commonly found in netbooks etc where cost was often a major factor).

    Thanks.

The superhub broadcasts both channels. Was basically just curious if it made a difference to the speeds etc.

It could make a difference to the speeds, but only if:

    a) The router and device can broadcast and receive on 2 channels, and/or two frequencies (2.4GHz/5GHz) giving up to 300meg; OR

    b) The 5GHz channel is quiet (few or no other 5GHz networks nearby).

Your laptop most likely does not have a 5ghz adapter.

You can by a 5ghz dual band usb network adapter to add this.

    Is it worth it though?

In my opinion, if you're getting good enough reception on the 2.4GHz band there's nothing to be gained by going for a 5GHz adaptor.
