OE delays sending emails

Whenever I send an email via OE (many a day, to head office and my staff), it takes about 20 seconds saying "connecting", then I get this window saying:

The connection to the server has failed. Account: 'pop.orange.co.uk', Server: 'smtp.wanadoo.co.uk', Protocol: SMTP, Port: 25, Secure(SSL): No, Socket Error: 10051, Error Number: 0x800CCC0E

Eventually the emails are sent but not until half an hour, or even more, after I need them to go. I have resorted to using hotmail for really urgent messages, but is there anything I can do to return OE to normal?

I thought I post this here before contacting Orange and wait interminably and expensively, only to speak to someone I can't understand and who can't do anything.

Thanks.

This is only a guess, but I'd have thought it may be better if your ISP is Orange to change your smtp (I suppose it may be smtp.orange.co.uk). Orange may only be maintaining the wanadoo server names as a low priority legacy system since taking over.

Your SMTP should be set to smtp.orangehome.co.uk

Thanks for the replies. This glitch has only happened in the last month or so, since I upgraded to a faster BB package (joke innit?). Before there were no problems.

I'll follow up on the suggestions above.

Well in that case I think I shall let sleeping dogs lie and wait for Orange to sort themselves out. It is not a major problem for me at the moment as I can always use my hotmail account, and since I'm not super computer savvy, I'd rather not mess with settings and then get myself in a muddle.

Thanks for that link - it was an eye opener. :)

It would only take seconds to change your SMTP setting to what Orange state that it should be though!

No matter if orange are having problems with some of their servers it would still seem logical to me to set your server settings to your recommended ISP settings. Since Wanadoo doesn't even exist anymore there's no real good reason to continue using it's smtp name.

I have changed the smtp to orange.co.uk and sent an email to my hotmail address. It went immediately. I hope this is how it's going to stay.

As I said I'm not that computer savvy (but learning), so thank you all again for your advice.

Same problem and solution (?) here. Very easy to change with just a few clicks.
