Hello,
So I came home today, switched on my pc and it just powered off during boot up. Switched it on again logged into windows. The monitor just went black and the computer powered off into sleep mode. Woke it up only for 30 minutes later it does the same thing again. Now it seems stable but I'm sure it will reoccur sooner or later.
Kinda bummed out because it seems like it could be anything.
I have toggled about with power options (switched sleep/hibernation to never).
Scanned for spyware using windows defender and malware using Malwarebytes. Both were negative.
Tomorrow I will check the PSU connections to the the motherboard. See if anything is loose but I doubt it.
Thinkiing about resetting my BIOS to factory settings incase anything changed.
I have no clue as to why this is happening so if anybodyelse has any other suggestions would it be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
Pc specs:
i7 960
660 Ti GTX
Asus P6X58D-E
12gb Ram
650 Corsair TX series.

could be a number of things but one to look for is overheating shut down protection what temp is the cpu getting to before it shuts down.
ive had memory issues where it was fine untill you physically touched the system, then it would knock off.
TJ max values in the bios set too low?
cpu fan not spinning?
PSU thermal protection causing shut off?0 -
Thanks for the reply.
How do I test the things you mentioned?0 -
clean you PC throroughly inside, (can of compressed air works well from asda by the PC accessories isle) lots of dust and debris form dust can casue heat retention to heatsinks, and prevent air passing through the heatsink.
same with PSU.
in the bios TJ max values should be un altered but in the bios hardware monitor it should give you a run down of the cpu heat temps and temp max limit, but ive known people to accidentally play with the values in the bios and set them too low wich will cause the PC to shutdown thinking it needs to protect from overheat.0 -
Ok cheers...sounds lengthly. Probably get round to it tomorrow and post back the results here.0

When you boot the compy, put it in safe mode, stop on error, tell us the code, then we can put it into the interweb and find out what is wrong!
Generally, memory loose, reseat it, or missing files, boot windows cd, and select 'repair', very easy.
If peoples compy breaks down so often; this site should have a Sticky, to tell you how to get the code, and how to digest it. It is pretty simple.
Lost a file/memory issue, put Windows disk in, select repair, or reseat/replace memory...Simples!0 -

the mobo has a memok button, and checks the memory when the power button is pressed on start up anyway, the there will be series of beeps if there was something faulty, so OP could do a memtest without even starting the PC, green light good 1 beep ok beeps and flash sequence from the memok status led bad.
OP when the PC shuts down of its own accord, press the memok button on the mobo, (check mobo owner manual for help in this and what can be expected and codes should be in the manual aswell if it turn out bad).
OP asus run a bad batch of mobo's not so long ago. check your mobo's seriel tag for the batch number and google the mobo and batch code or serial and date of production to check that this isnt one of them bad lines.
it maybe a bios update caused a fault if you have flashed the bios with a new one recently, go back to asus website and download the previous one and roll it back.
if you have a PCIE graphics card installed it maybe worth taking it out and booting from the onbourd graphics instead just to rule out a faulty card (have you had periodic nvidia or ATI driver crash pre this fault?)
have you heared a fan spin loudly lately on start up? or when youve got to boot to windows thats a sign something is hot and needs a clean.0 -
the usual cause of this problem is over heating. check if the fan is still working and bring it to a technician.0

I think you will find it is a failing power supply, are you able to try another ?There are 10 types of people who understand binary, those that do and those that don't !0
