PhD Funding

I have applied for a PhD - however, i am required to fund it myself and am looking for ways to do this - I have heard that charities will sometimes donate money to research.

I have a part time job which will generate some money but no where near enough to help me live.

Has anyone got any ideas of how I can generate some funding for my PhD. Thank you

I would have researched funding options before applying. Everything is ultra-competitive which means your chances of actually getting a specific source is quite small, so knowing all the available options gives you the best opportunity of getting something. Good luck!
  • Well the position i have applied for is partially funded - so im ok in some respects (i wouldn't have applied without looking first - thank you though). im going to be working to try and cover the rest. i just wondered if there were any other options to help.

Thank you for your help :)

I'm not too sure what the criteria for this loan is, but might help!

Unlikely to help: these loans are typically for one-year courses and they are quite strict about starting repayments after that (whether or not you have a job).
  • What subject are you looking to do? This has a massive impact on funding opportunities.

Im looking at doing it within Forensic Science - improving current processes through new technology
  • Honestly, as you are a scientist I wouldn't even consider self-funding a PhD (even partially - I gather from your posts they are offering you fees only). Turn it down and keep applying for the fully funded places next academic year. Charities tend to only offer a few hundred here and there, and it's a hugely time-consuming application task. If it were English or something like that where the competition is massive maybe, but science PhD funding availability is pretty OK still.
