Fix ending
do I wait until 30 Sept and then swap to another fix of my choice, or should I do it now, taking into account the time it takes to swap over?
If I wait, should I also swap to a cheaper EDF deal for the interim period, rather than, presumably, being dumped on their standard tariff for a few weeks?

do It now, otherwise you be paying the new rate when your current supplier switches you over automatically to your new more expensive tarrif,
tho saying that, it wont be much in long term till you switched over to whatever tariff you decide to go for, sooner you find a deal the better, and start the process0 -
If there's a penalty for terminating your EDF contract early, then wait until about 2 weeks before the end of the month and start the switch then. The new supplier won't actually start the process until their cooling off period has expired, so won't contact EDF until after that time. If you're staying with EDF but switching to a better tariff than their standard one, they'll probably do that for you the day your existing tariff ends.

Then you've got nothing to lose by starting now.
It typically takes around 6 weeks to swap, so you'll keep your current EDF rate until the end of the tariff. The small extra you'll pay on their standard tariff for a few weeks isn't going to be that significant in the grander scale of things, but might as well keep it as short as possible.
Still might be worth seeing what is the best tariff EDF can offer you. If you're happy with them, then perhaps it will be worth staying. Their billing system and constant recalculation of the direct debit has driven many customers crazy, but it does seem to be improving now - still recalculating every time they get a reading, but not constantly in an unnecessary upward direction IME.

I agree with the ever changing DD! Think mine changed every month for the first 6 months! Seems to have settled lately, although they still seem to take far too much - hence occasional requests for refunds.
I have nothing else against EDF, and quite frankly I can live with the DD. I was just looking at the npower deal, as it is slightly better.
Although to be fair, I'm still not sure which fix to go for yet! EDF's long one is very long, but equally priced, so tempted to go for a 1 or 2 year fix.

I'm on an EDF fixed tariff until April next year, having switched from their previous fixed tariff last September. With them removing the penalty for leaving early, and allowing you to sign up to it early but stay on the current fix until it ended, it was really a no-brainer to go with the new fix (and monitor the DD's carefully).
I'll certainly get another winter out of it before looking what's available. I've been on fixed tariffs for many years now and have always been ahead of the game by the end of each one.
