I don't know if it helps, but I was under the impression that funeral costs coule be drawn against the Estate on production of death certificate and funeral bill. As regards dodgy cheque cashing advice, a stunning endorsement of Lloyds Bank customer service! The Money Shop charges £14 per £100 cheque, high APR, but in the overall scheme of things worth considering if you need a bit of cash short-term. Personally, I would write and complain strongly about this "advice", they might give you a bit of compensation to resolve the complaint quickly, and if not, you will have wasted quite a bit of their time and resources in retaliation for their unhelpfulness.

These days, Banks really are a bunch of useless numptys, totally devoid of common sense and joined-up thinking! One day they send you off to the Money Shop, a few days later they will be trying to sell you some form of savings account!

Sorry to learn of the problems.

The guy at the meeting had some wise words :)

If you do cash a cheque by the time it gets to your account you'll have the money and even though out of £20k if you got a few charges for making a mistake in timing it wouldn't be a big dent in the amount plus maybe you could reclaim the charges but, I doubt it'd come to that :)

I dislike Lloyds anyway so ...

I hate Lloyds but for lots of different reasons but my husband banks with Yorkshire Bank and they are so behind the times. There internet banking is limited, we cancelled direct debits and a couple of months later went to re set them up and they couldnt do that as they used the same company name ended up costing us £60 with the mortgage company as it came back to them as if we were cancelling the direct debits not the bank.

Also recently we have been trying to order cheque books and not receiving them, this has been going on two months, emailed the helpdesk as our branch is 100 miles away (this is another weakness with Yorkshire Bank there passion with faxing between branches!) and they said they were sorting out evenutally still not having recieved a book we phoned them turns out the system for no apparent reason was cancelling them everytime we ordered them.

In the past year I have opened a bank with Cahoot and Alliance and Leicester too soon to say what I think of A&L but Cahoot have been very convenient and quick to respond. I know others will have huge horror stories but at least Cahoot can deal with basics which Yorkshire struggle on!

I work for the bank (ducks flying missles!!)

They would have been unable to give you an overdraft for many reasons eg you only have a cash account or that in the past you have not conducted your account properly. Can you put your hand on heart and tell me that you have not had either direct debits or cheques returned unpaid or gone overdrawn without permission or have had any defaults etc on your credit files?

If you can say all that then I can sympathise but we have to adhere to our Personal Lending Dept who say yes or no.

If there have been problems in the past then your original posting is a little unbalanced but understandable considering the pressure you must be under currently.

    My condolences for your loss.

I have banked with Lloyds for over 25 years and I have always played by the rules. In return they have alwasy been very accommodating with any request for an overdraft or a loan. So easy to keep knocking them but with me they have been A1.

Personally I have banked with Lloyds for 50+ years and never had a problem. I am an only child, had Power of Attorney for both my parents - first my father died, then 4 years later mum my mother.

One thing I would point out is I don't know why you were advised to take along your Enduring Power of Attorney. It is only valid while the person is alive. Once they have died, it is invalid.

Don't even think about doing this. I know someone who did do this as they thought they were guaranteed a lump sum of money a few days later only it took 3 extra weeks to come thorough in the mean time the dodgy guy repossessed her car to pay the bill which was for £800, he sold the car for £3500. Lloyd's an be quite difficult to deal with if you have money problems. I know someone who was actually called a liar by one of their debt management plan representatives, Lloyd's apologised and said they were going to re train her, I've often wondered if they ever bothered. If it was me i would make sure the 20K goes into the account at Lloyd's and then transfer it from the bank itself over to Yorkshire Bank and then close the account at the same time.

I have also banked with Lloyd's for over 25 years. They totally screwed up my current account with an Off Shore account i have and due to this going on for months i was nearly forced into bankruptcy. Thankfully its all sorted now, but i don't do my main banking with them anymore and nor will i ever again.

    Personal lending department says no....

As I say, Numpties lacking common sense and discretion. I mean, a whole £200 with a risk factor of 0.01%, this could end Lloyds as a Bank!!

As regards cashing a cheque, most places do a cash til' payday option where they cash a cheque and present it 30 says later. If money is delayed beyond 30 days, you can pay a fee and they hold the cheque for another Month. I think Chnagkra was referring to Logbook loans that are entirely different and not a good idea for a short-term loan like this.
