Our BT line has been dead for 7 weeks or more, granted we were out of the country for much of that time. It has been reported and we have had an engineer out, the problem is the external wiring apparantly. Nothing been done yet though. Can we claim refund on line rental for all that time?

Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

I notice that "booklet" doesn't mention amounts! An elderly friend of mine had her phone off for 14 days and I've heard that as she had calls diverted to her mobile all she'll get is £14 (£1 per day) plus line rental refunded for the period (around a fiver). Seems rather mean for a 78 year-old who relies on her phone.

BT's incompetence contributed to the length of time taken to fix it. A neighbour refuses access to the pole on their property, BT decide to dig up the road to install underground but are reported by same neighbour for it and council make them fill it in to gain proper permission. Then line is in and they decide to wait another few days before sending someone to do the internal wiring.
