Visa debit charge back

Hi I wonder whether anyone can offer some advice so me.

Around a month ago I purchased a new bathroom suite from a company called Harrison McCarthy who is based around the North west. This bathroom suite was meant to be delivered last Friday, however this didn't happen and I found out that the company went bust on Tuesday last week.

Now I used my Visa debit card to pay the amount. I have contacted my bank who is Halifax to see whether they can claim the money back and i'm waiting to see what happens. I have also wrote a letter to me bank mentioning the charge back procedure and asking whether I will recieve my money back or not.

Can anyone give me any advice on what my chances will be on getting this money back?

I know alot of people got there money back when farepak went bust but was wondering whether regardless of size of company has anyone else had to do this and were they successful in getting there money back?

Thanks alot.

Stan...

I do not know for definite but i think you might be in with a good chance, as I recall when the farepak situation hit people who had paid by Visa regardless of whether it was a debit or credit card were covered. Those who paid by Maestro were not. All credit card are regulated by the Consumer Credit Act which would have protected you, but I think Visa have additional rules. Good luck. James

  • Thanks Derrick, I hope I get the money back. Halifax didn't give me alot of confidence though when I spoke to them, it sounded like they were going to contact the company to try and claim the money back.

Which obviously they wont a reply, also the advisor I spoke to didn't know whether I could claim the money back or not.

    Let i'm wrong!

There was a poster on these forums from Halifax some time ago who catagorically said that the Halifax would refund on Visa debit cards the same as a Credit card.
I did not believe him (sorry can't remember his name and it is more than 300 postings back) and he could not back up his story with hard evidence.

My understanding is that Halifax do not have to refund you with a debit card but they may decide to do so as a gesture of goodwill.

I managed to get a customer back their money who made a payment on their Halifax visa debit card to Olan Mills that went bust.

I did say at the time I was not sure, but they got their money back.
  • regularsaver1 could you tell me how you got the money back?

Was it just a case of sending them a letter asking that they use the chargeback procedure to get this money back?
