Thanks everyone - I've calmed down a bit now.

Yes it's my first offence and I did panic when I saw the letter - had visions of being dragged away screaming and crying from court in a Paris Hilton stylee !

I'm tempted to go and view the photos as I'd like to see o mph I know it's my right to view the photos but how can I be sure it won't prejudice my case - I think they might label me as a trouble maker and oomph the punishment ?

PS I meant 'amber gambler' but as you've prob gathered my brain can't be held accountable for its actions sometimes

Don't let the b******s get you down. We live in a nazi style country with the government telling us what we can and can't do and fining us at every posssible avenue, while letting child abusers etc off scott free.

Please. This is a serious matter: as a cyclist I have come within an inch (literally) of losing my life to a motorist who chose to ignore a red light. Similarly, people who break the speed limit cause death and injury to others. The police are absolutely right to enforce these rules.

As for child abusers getting off 'scot free', do you have any evidence? If you are relying on reports in the media, I think you will find that they refer to cautions in cases that were actually highly ambiguous (eg where one person was 16, the other 15).

Someone last week skipped a red light and nearly run me and my daughter over as we were crossing on the 'green man' at a pedestrian crossing, lthank god I stopped as he speeded passed us, just missing us.

I'm not condoning people who jump red lights - its v dangerous and I would NEVER do that on a pedestian crossing - I'm the driver who waits for all the pedestrians to have both feet on the other pavement before setting off as drilled into me by my driving instructor 12 years ago!

I know I'm in the wrong but please don't tar me with the same brush as people who knock down cyclists and pedestrians by jumping red lights at pedestiran crossings.

I thought the light was amber and as I said before I know this junction well and know that there is a gap of about 10 seconds between one set changing to red and the other changing to green. I thought even if the light was on amber I had plenty of time before the other traffic set off.

I'm still in the wrong and willing to take my punishment if thats the case. I posted this thread becuase I did something stupid and was worried out of my wits I had to go to court, not so that people could get ontheir soapbox about pedestrians and cyclists.

no I wasn't trying to make you feel bad, there are the select few that do jump the red light on purpose.

It is easily done I have had to emergancy break a few times myself.

Purleeeease, I see LOADS of bikes going through red lights! Hardly any cars do. And if you are a good cyclist, then checking whether any cars look like not stopping before crossing the junction might be a good thing...

And why is it cyclists think they can ride the wrong way up my one-way street? I nearly hit one the other day as I reversed off my drive.

I HATE the high-and-mighty attitude of some cyclists.

Anyway, back on topic.... driving for 12 years without any fine or points is pretty good going these days!

If a cyclist breaks the rules and gets hit, then the cyclist gets injured. If a motorist breaks the rules and hits a cyclist, then the cyclist gets injured.

I have never read of a cyclist geting one of these notices but I have seen many going through red lights. Do they have a different highway code than the rest of us? I wonder if the police cameras record cyclists and if they choose to ignore sending them a letter or trying to with no evidence of ownership.

Maybe Cycles should have a sort of number plate too, then the goverment can get even more cash out of us.
