Bacon!

Options
We have 1kg of bacon to stretch into as many meals as possible this month.

I thought of bacon and mushroom tagliatelle - once with white sauce, once with tomato sauce and hunter's chicken but then I'm stuck apart from bacon sarnies. Any ideas?

We have about £30 to buy things to go with our meat (we have chops, chicken, mince, beef as well - finding it easier to think of meals for them)

We love Bacon and Potatoes. Simply layer a large shallowish dish with discs of potato (not too thick) sliced onions, add water and cover with foil, steam out on a low heat for a couple of hours, remove the foil, layer bacon across the top and replace into the oven until bacon is cooked but not crisp, then turn up heat till bacon is cooked to preference. Potatoes should be steamed through and soft. Serve with carrot and swede or peas. Lovely.
  • I made egg and bacon pie for the first time this week and it was a great hit :j

I would also make a bacon omelette and a quiche :)

get some eggs and make a bacon omelette and/or a bacon quiche?

pea and bacon soup (or veggie soup with bacon bits). Not that different to ham...

add to rice and veg (and leftovers) for a risotto/fried rice

chop up and use as topping for jacket potatoes/crispy potato skins/stuffed potatoes.

    spaghetti carbonara.

Bacon is a great meat to have. You hardly need any of it to add quite a bit of taste to a dish...any dish really. As meat is so expensive it really saves a lot of money reducing the size of your meat portions.

There has been a few posts here with people saying they are only satisfied if their meat portion is no less than 200 grams (7 ounces)...that would be 6 slices of bacon. All you really need is just one slice each sliced up and thrown into the dish. If you buy cooking bacon at 81p/500 grams (Tesco) and spend half an hour cutting the fat off and portioning it up to freeze then it goes a very long way. Render the fat off and you've got some fat (lard) to cook with later on too...and some pork scratchings....yummy....

Quiche, omelette, in fried rice, with pasta...carbonara or a tomato sauce as a filling for baked potatoes?

Have a look at this thread for lots of ideas:

    What to do with bacon

I'll add this thread to it later to keep the suggestions together.

  • Thanks everyone. The search didn't throw up that thread Pink. but looks good :) Can't believe I didn't think of scabby turtles!

It's butcher's smoked bacon so is good thick cuts and will be stretched out to very little per meal!

I don't know how many times I've posted this (apologies if anyone is sick of me!) but chopped bacon, frozen peas, pasta, cream and salt and pepper - it tastes fantastic!
