Calais : good alcohol & other purchases ?

I will be passing through Calais at end of this month.

Does anyone have any recommendations on cheap beer, wines & spirits they have tried - or anything else that is worth buying ? Or is all the cheapest stuff there to attract the tourist money and not worth it

Any outlets particularly better than others ?

Since the Euro soared in value over the last decade there aren't the same bargains there used to be, but wine is still a good buy as you'll save UK duty.

It's a few miles out of Calais, but I found this place - http://www.boursot.co.uk/ - much nicer than the big warehouses around Calais - they stock a good range from cheap table wine to fine wines for cellaring.
Let's settle this like gentlemen: armed with heavy sticks
On a rotating plate, with spikes like Flash Gordon
And you're Peter Duncan; I gave you fair warning

We stopped somewhere near the French and Belgian border, but it was in Belgium. The car park was just full of british cars ;)

My husband and his friend went last year for wine, beer and a trip to Belgium for tobacco. Tobacco was a great price.
    Have a look here http://www.calaiswine.co.uk/
all the prices there, I like my pink fizz and it is pricey here when u fancy a bottle of a weekend so saved me a good few quid getting it in France.
He also bought a case of saint omer beer back 20 bottles £6 and it tastes nice to.

What about spirits or are the supermarkets of in terms of price, i remember the prices of spirits in Auchan, Carrefour etc were same as here but that was about 7 years ago so might be a better xchnage rate now.

Check out the Pidou website. Three branches, lots of special offers. Beer fans should check out packs of 24 St. Omer.

If you are travelling through France to get to Calais, I would do my shopping before getting there. Prices are higher in the port areas than the rest of France, but they are still usually lower than the UK.
