My sons comp sometimes shuts itself down if it gets too hot.
He has moved the hard drives so they are not so close together and added an extra fan which seems to have helped.

Make sure it is not dusty inside(turn off and unplug first) as the dust build up can burn out components.

My daughters last comp kept shutting down and it was the integrated graphics controller on the hard drive which finally died. Luckily we had a spare comp she could use till it was replaced.

Things will slow down enormously if it hasnt been defragmented for a while.
I do mine once a week after the virus scanner has gone through everything, then run spybot.

The system shutting down because its too hot is either controlled by additional software or part of the BIOS (built-in). Most of the systems though give you a warning before hand to indicate its too hot (a constant beep) and after the temperature rises a bit more then they normally shut down.

50 proc's running at fresh boot?

Good Greef! Could be a job for D.M....

svchost.exe (more than one is ok)
    IEXPLORE.EXE
    explorer.exe
    smss.exe
    system
    system idle process
    services.exe
    spoolsv.exe

What others do you have? Think mine has 14 on start-up at home. Will check.

There should be an option in BIOS to enable/disable auto-shut-down for high CPU core temp's.

Something people foget to do, especially the people who buy a p.c prer-built and have never seen inside the case.

Like culpepper said; get a vacume attachment inside the case and get all that dust out. Clean ALL the fins on ALL the fans....CPU silicone goes 'off' after a year and doesnt perform like it did.

I do this every 4-6months, depending on season. It brings the temps down 5C's.

Grrrrrrrr, computer turned off twice more last nite, once meaning I lost an item for my daughter on ebay and then again as I was typing out my control/alt/delete results on to this forum,so here goes again.
Apparently I am running 49 processes,No idea what is what, they mostly seem to end in "exe"
My cpu usage was flicking up and down in gradients between 2percent and 17percent,with two jumps upto 42percent in the 5minutes or so that I watched it.
Other information that I don't understand but I'm posting just in case it is relevant
    pf usage was 191mb
    commit charge 191m/1250m.

This problems seems like it may be hardware related rather than software. Worth taking off the back of the case and seeing if all the fans are working OK. Also a clean out wont hurt.

This also sounds as though it could be a PSU problem. You could get these type of symptoms if your PSU is on its way out.

I cleaned and checked the fans recently as someone had also suggested this might be the problem and it made no difference. When I checked in the task manager as an earlier poster had instructed me to do,it was saying in both boxes that the system was healthy. What else can I do without professional diagnostic equipment to check things??
As an afterthought, another problem I have is that sometimes the cursor will freeze, and a restart is the only way to get it working again..

Did you test the memory, as I suggested earlier?
  • Haven't seen mention of it, and nothing else seems to be working. Have you got your CPU overclocked? This can lead to significant changes in core temp, and if the CPU fan isn't up to the job, it might explain the blue screen crashes.

BTW, my TM shows 34 processes running, but there is a lot of c**p on mine.

run with the side off and see if it takes longer to crash, this is how we discovered my sons comp was just getting too hot. Check the fans are actually going round.
It could be there are too many extras plugged into the comp and the power supply just cant handle the load.If you have a lot of extra bits ,n,bobs you could try running without connecting them and see if that helps. Its very easy to change the power supply unit if that is the problem.
