EDF Final Bill - Help

I moved into a rented property on 1st October last year and signed up to a direct debit with EDF to provide both electricity and gas for the property, which was small and had one bedroom.

I paid £60 per month direct debit for both gas and electricity. As I moved out of the property on 1st September, I provided a final meter reading to EDF over the phone. I was £600 in credit from 10 months of 10 x £60 payments.

To my horror, I received the final bill this morning and the credit I had built up has been obliterated by a total final bill of £1233.28 - £633.28 if you take away the £600.00 credit I'd accumulated.

When I read my electricity meter at the beginning and gave the reading, it sat at 93208. The reading at the end of the tenancy read 01031. Gas was 489, and 948 at the end.

Aren't they required to amend your direct debit depending on usage? Would anyone be able to shed some light on whether they're over charging? It's a huge amount...

So you haven't had any bills since Oct 1st, which I come to by the fact you're £600 in credit. Had you supplied any readings at all since you moved in, or anybody come to read your meters?

Which EDF tariff are/were you on?

Assuming EDF Standard tariff, no Eco 7 and a metric gas meter... Prices are approximate.

Electricity works out to 7,003 KwH hours, your meter's just rolled over, works out to around £1,050.
Gas works out to 5,135KwH, about £300.
Combined sum as I've rounded these, £1350 for both.

Take off dual-fuel discount, £8.40 a year, + 6% discount for direct debit, I come to just over £1260 using your figures.

Did you give them regular meter readings so that they could amend your DD's depending on your usage?

  • Tariff was Blue + Price Promise May 2014 for both.

    Electricity exact break down was 7823 kWh used x 12.05p + £46.90 standing charge = £989.57

    Gas exact break down was 459 units x 3.767p + £73.70 standing charge = £267.21

They were never in touch for a meter reading until last week, whereas I never contacted them either to give a reading. I have always been due money back with other energy companies, what a fool.

What would be the best approach for paying the debt back in that case? I can't afford the massive bill in the one go.

So you never wondered why you never had a bill & never gave meter readings?
If you had taken regular meter readings you could have worked out if you were on target for your anticipated annual consumption originally advised/assumed and if you had submitted those reading you would have even got a bill indicating the current balance.

Also at 6 months EDF would have revised the monthly amount so not to have left you with such a huge bill today.
  • Most utility companies mislead customers by telling them they can pay a smaller DD amount than is actually sufficient to cover the consumption.

They then increase the DD after a few months when they "realise" the consumption is higher than expected.

I've been working in the industry a few months now and it's something several of the major players seem to be doing to attract new customers.

    The regulator is toothless.

My advice is to simply look at the unit rate and daily standing charge and work out for yourself if you will be better off switching or not and to check your consumption regularly to make sure you are paying the correct amount.

74.9% of statistics are also made up on the spot

You go to to say you've been in the industry a few months (so you've a heck of a lot still to learn) but going by the advice you have given, I wonder if you'll even be in the industry in a few months time, sorry to say.

Maybe ask for more training if you are serious about staying in the industry. :)
