This happened to me over 40 years ago. Went for an interview for a job in Dept A, told I'd passed interview but would be working for Dept B (same "umbrella co" but completely different work, organisation, promotion and pay structure).

Decided to take early retirement after 35 years there.

I have had several jobs over the past ten years which have been totally different to the job I applied for and was interviewed for. I should say that they have always ended badly, and try as I might, I cannot understand why an employer would lie to a candidate just to get them in the door or fill a seat.
I am totally honest with employers regarding my experience, because I think it is a waste of everyone's time if you try to force square pegs into round holes.
On one occasion, I deliberately mentioned that I did not have experience of a certain software, and that I had no experience of a certain area of accounts. The interviewer said that was OK as full training would be given on the software, and that they did not venture into the particular area of accounts which I had stated.
On day one, I had to share a desk, I did not have a password or login for the system, the department manager assumed that I did know the software (she did not have time to train me on it), and the accounts which they were involved in, was around 90% of the sort which I did not have any experience of. It transpired that this was a situation where HR had set about filling the position without consulting with the accountant.
In another role, I turned up to find that the person who was supposed to be mentoring me was on holiday for three weeks, nobody else could show me the system, and then it turned out I was to be providing system software support (not accounts/payroll/budgeting) on a system which I had never used before.
Going back to the OP's comments about powdered milk, I once worked in an office, where there was a weekly rota to buy tea, coffee, milk, sugar and biscuits for everyone - and you couldn't opt out. The same firm (senior partner on £250K) expected the staff to vacuum the office (again in a rota) and clean the loos - I didn't last long there!
