Disability benefits

Hi

Hoping someone can help!

I've been losing hair through stress today trying to work through this minefield.

My current situation is i am working part time whilst also claiming tax credits/housing benefit.
My boyfriend is unemployed, receiving dla with severe disability component. He is in the support group category and currently receiving income-based payments.

We are hoping to move in together. If we did and i am earning £7500 a year, would my partner still receive any of his benefits??

Im worried he will lose them all. And mobility?

Anyone with any knowledge would be hugely appreciated. I plan on going to citizens advice but it is often like bashing your head against a wall. My partner rang someone but their answer didnt make any sense at all.

Thanks in advance :)

  • He will keep his DLA both the care and mobility component if you move in together but he will loose his severe disability premium if he receives it as you only get it if you live alone. Your housing benefit may be affected. He will get a discount on your council tax as he is disabled.

I have just lost my severe disability premium because my dad who is my carer had to move in to help me. I now only get the enhanced disability premium.

You and your partner should go to job centre plus for advice about benefits and also contact your council to find out how your housing benefit and council tax benefit will be affected.

Good luck I hope you manage to live together.
  • Thank you so much for your reply. That is brilliant. I spent most of the day trying to work out how to support us both and my 2 children without any money at all so to know he will keep some is a brilliant help.

    Thanks again :)
  • Disabled people don't always get a discount on their council tax. It is usually given if a wheelchair is used indoors, or if there is an additional bathroom or kitchen specifically for their use. You might also get a discount if you need an additional room for therapy, but I'm not certain about this.

The discount is made by charging the rate for the next band down, so if you live in a band C property, you will be charged at band B rate. Band A is still discounted, but by a percentage.

My son is disabled and we have a wet room for his use. Each year I have to sign a declaration that he still lives here and is still disabled and using the wet room.

If you are on a low income, you can still claim council tax support even after a disability discount has been applied. Joint income is taken into consideration, but although DLA has to be declared, it is disregarded.

You may also want to put your figures into the Turn2us calculator, to give you an idea of how much income and benefits you will have.

DLA is not affected by income. However, there is no 'support group category' to DLA, that is ESA. Your income/savings/assetts would be taken into account for income-related ESA.
