Vauxhall astra warning lights help??

Hi there im looking for a bit of advice please

My car cut out yesterday after filling with water and driving 30miles. I have no temp gauge (!!!!!!) and had no warning via any type of lights on the dash.

Was told by greenflag the heater hose had snapped and needed a water pump.

I have now been told that my car overheated and had damaged the engine, either the piston rings, head gaskett or the engine!

My q is should i have had a warning light or something to tell me there was something wrong before it just conks out and costs me a fortune to fix!!

Model 2007 astra club 1.4 (56 plate)

Well, because the temp gauge measures water temperature, you probably wouldn't see a temperature warning. BUT the coolant tank has (or should have) a water level meter that sets of a warning light on the dash when the level drop more than a few inches below the line.

    Just read manual Found

    Coolant temperature
Control indicator W illuminates when coolant temperature is too high. Check coolant level immediately:

I got no W on my dash!!

Was the coolant low or was there another reason you filled it with water?

If you have no water then the water temperature sensor wont have anything to tell it its too hot.

If the engine was hot when you topped the water up then you could have cracked the head/block from the rapid cooling.

Do you have the infotainment stereo system? Menu shows fluid levels.

Temperature warning icon in the rev counter?

I checked it when it was cold and filled it not quite to the line. Filled it with luke warm water! My hubby had said it was low the night before?

Replace the clip or hose, fill it with water and start it up.
    See what happens.
The Greenflag bloke has normally had instruction in towing you to the nearest garage only.

If the car is at the garage they towed it to, get it collected without telling them you are coming for it and get it taken to someone you can trust.

I towed it myself as it was 32 miles away and only get 10 mile recovery. Garage did that first and then compression tested the engine and nothing?

Its my friends hubby thank god i can trust him

If the Engine has goosed beyond a head gasket if he finds a company called dixon vauxhall spares, they often have full engines packed and ready to go on pallets out of cars that have been bumped and written off and a straight swap can cut down labour bills and work out much less than fixing and guessing .

He should know that in two hours, which is what it takes to strip the head off.
But if it is not the gasket and he wants to rebuild the engine then that is a no-no from money saving points of view and will cost thousands when a transplant engine can be fitted and working in a day.
    Be happy...;)
