It might be handy to top miles up, but unless you are putting company spends or something really significant on it, it's unlikely to make the miles for a trip as described.
    you would be surprised.

A lot of frequent flyers use these credit/charge cards to generate a serious amount of miles. It is quite easy to churn £500 per week, just buying 3v virtual Visas via Tesco and/or Homebase. These would also earn club card points and/or Nectar points as well as the 2 miles per £1 spent.
It is easy to activate spend bonus's that way. These can include Free companion tickets with reward bookings on certain airlines.

I use the 3vs to pay my council tax. A lot of self employed pay their main tax bill with them too.
You can also recycle them via a NS&I acc.

Budgetflyer is spot on. So far this year I have accumulated 35k AAdvantage miles by putting £2k through a card, 241 BA CW tickets for putting £10k through BA Amex, 50k Avios for £4,000 spend on 2 Starwood Amex, 50k avios for £6,000 spend on 2 Amex prefered golds. So far I have churned £5k through buying 3v cards.
The common law of business balance prohibits paying a little and getting a lot. If you deal with the lowest bidder, it is well to add something for the risk you run, and if you do that you will have enough to pay for something better.
  • A bit of work and yes you can certainly make it work.

My mate is currently with his gf for her 30th bday and he's taken her BA First to Mexico with his miles...

"Can someone please explain what's loyal about that"

Can you explain what's 'loyal' about flying once with an airline?

No I didn't expect to get one free but I didn't think it would cost me £300 more per flight than not using points
Online price Glasgow to Mackay £1094
Using Loyalty points Glasgow to Brisbane £1280
Apologies, I didn't look closely at the figures.
loose does not rhyme with choose but lose does and is the word you meant to write.

If that passenger only flew one flight per year - aren't they are 100% loyal to the airline that carried them? :)

    I wouldn't.

I know we're going off topic here, but from what I hear 3Vs are difficult to get hold of as Tesco are always sold out. Spend bonuses tend to be one offs in the first few months after getting a card, so good to kick start earning but not an ongoing source of miles. But I do appreciate where you're coming from.

In this case you're not talking about manufactured spend as budgetflyer is (if I understand him/her correctly), but actual spend of £22K (excluding the 3Vs) in 8 months. That's just under £3K per month which is what I would call significant and not practical for most. Please correct me if I've misinterpreted your post.

The OP would have to spend that monthly for 2.5 years to get enough miles for one return and she wants two.

I realise it's Emirates that's started this, and that's who I'm familiar with. Other cards/programs may well offer more and it'd be interesting to see a topic on this subject here on MSE.

PS. Range Pre-Paid Master Card anyone?
  • It's obviously for high flyers not a semi retired mother who wants to visit her Son every year or two :(thought I may have saved £100 or so on the flight but thanks for the tip of using the points on Easyjet rather than losing them :T

Well it is a frequent flyer programme as per their own site:
Make the Most of Every Mile with Emirates Skywards
Our award-winning frequent flyer programme costs nothing to join and will change the way you see the world forever.

If you really want to make the most of it you'd need to look at other ways to earn miles, like taking out their credit card, erewards etc and then you may find you can get a more substantial discount or such every couple of trips.
