Is it possible to get credit with defaults that have been satisfied for four years?

Apologies if this is in the wrong section.

My OH was in a dmp which ended September 2009, she had a number of defaults still showing on her credit file that have been satisfied for 4 years. Will it be possible fir her to get credit now? Nothing major just a phone contract to start helping her credit rating.

Does anyone know whuch provider might give her a contract? Or which definately wouldn't?

It is possible she will be able to get credit now. Not certain by any means but possible. You say they have been settled 4years - how old are the original defaults on those accounts?

Does she have any active credit now? anything that is not showing as defaulted?

People generally report that it quite a lot easier to get a 30day rolling SIM contract and that often the phone companies will then allow an upgrade to a full phone contract after a few months of running the rolling SIM contract, so that may be a possibility.

If she doesn't specifically want a phone contract then one of the lower subprime credit cards should be a possibility. Something like vanquis or capital one classic. She could look at the pre-application checks for those see here http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/credit-cards/bad-credit-credit-cards

I've never been turned down for a phone contract. Even O2 accepted me for a contract shortly after I defaulted with them.

I have 2 4-year-old satisfied defaults and an arrangement to pay all from roughly the same time.

  • Thankyou for the replies, she's not particularly bothered about a phone contract but as her phone has just broken it would have been convenient. I'll get her to look at the credit cards too. Her credit report shows she has 500 credit available with barclaycard although the account us actually closed and she doesn't even have a card. The original defaults were from before September 2008 but were paid off in full and settled between July and September 2009. I'm not sure if that means anything.

I'll reccomend she looks at O2 though. Thankyou.
