Do separates CD players have lots of dedicated connections and widgets or are they like computers and you can bang in a generic replacement unit? Or do you have to stick with manufacturer's component (assuming it is just the laser/lens that fails and not the motherboard.)

Not normally.
Usually just the audio outs. Analogue and possibly digital.0 -
No, I don't mean the external aux leads and connects. I mean inside the box, where the tray/lens unit connects with the rest of the circuitry.
Just wondering if a generic unit can be slipped in or if they have more gotchas than an inkjet manufacturer.0 -
What make and model of CD player is it?
Most of them use a generic transport so in most cases you can purchase and replace the transport/laser assembly.
Whether that is economic depends on the CD player.
It is probably not worth it for low end budget players as you can buy an inexpensive player complete very cheaply.
But it is probably worth it if the CD player is of decent quality.
Ebay usually has CD transports listed.0 -
Some makes and models use generic transport and laser assemblies, and these may be obtainable from the maker either of the HiFi or of the laser assembly.
In some notable high-end players, the player was designed around a particular transport which has long since ceased manufacture, and a failed transport in one of these machines leaves it as useful as a doorstop.
