Natwest trying to get money from an old credit card from 2008!!

Hi, i wondered if anyone had any advice! i recently had a letter from Natwest informing me i owed them over 1.5k for a credit card! i couldn't remember owning a credit card from Natwest, however when i rang up they said it was from 2008, and the last payment i made was in 2009!! i did take out quote a few cards (as it was offered to me left right and centre when i was a student) but i thought i had paid these off! they said it had been passed to 3 different credit agencies and i had refused to respond (even though they had the wrong address-apparently Natwest credit cards are totally separate to natwest banking, so even though i informed natwest of all changes...i still hold my current account and savings account there-they weren't informed-and this is my fault!) i have obviously forgotten about his, as i havent been contacted about in in the last 4 years, and suddenly this has come up at an awful time (im currently trying to get a mortgage!!!) Natwest said they have passed it to wescott credit services, and i have to ring them to set up a payment plan, and thats it!! i really dont know what to do! its a hell of a lot of money to just be sprung on me!! and im panicking!!!

They have 6 years and you last acknowledged the debt in 2009 and so well within the time limits.0

If you owe it then you pay it, if you want to be sure about it you can write to them and submit a SAR ( subject access request ) and you get everything related to the loan, so things like a list of payments made etc will be included.0

" i really dont know what to do!"
Hardly rocket science - pay the debt.0 -
any playment plan would have to be agreed by the creditor, not the agency. write and explain, offer what you can afford..
BE SURE to ask for any interest to be frozen..
(do find it hard to beleive the card part of natwest didnt make enquiries to banking side..)Long time away from MSE, been dealing real life stuff..
Sometimes seen lurking on the compers forum :-)0 -
Have they defaulted you already? They may well have - so a mortgage may be a non starter because of this until it becomes time barred on your file.0

Surprised you forgot about the debt when you say it is hell of a lot of money. They've rumbled you and now it is time to do the adult thing and arrange to repay the money you obviously enjoyed at their expense!0 -
They may accept a full and final offer of a reduced amount but you want to check what is on your credit file first to see what defaults or other items have been added already."We act as though comfort and luxury are the chief requirements of life, when all that we need to make us happy is something to be enthusiastic about” – Albert Einstein0

Also it has been known for banks to offset their debts, so you may find they use any money in your current/savings account to either clear or help clear the credit card debt.0

With that in mind I would stop day-to-day banking and move any saving for you mortgage deposit away from Natwest ASAP just so you don't find yourself suddenly short. This way you can easily arrange a payment plan on your terms in a manageable way.0 -
there is only one way to deal with this: as our Derby-supporting friend suggest, obtain all of the information, and then work through it, steadily...negotiating along the way. you need to protect your credit file as best you can, have interest frozen (or even some of it wiped off) and remove/reduce any charges. they want the debt clear too, which is a positive. also, i would focus on the 'I haven't been hiding, or hard to find, i bank with you!!!' approach, and make them acknowledge that it is their fault (at least in part) that this has been allowed to drag on.0
