Is there software

that I can install like a key logger? anyone know a site where I can get something, I would prefer something that I install as opposed to an object placed into/onto the computer.

Can anyone guide me?

Thank you :)

There are pieces of software called key loggers. they are normally just a single file that needs to be initialised on start up either in the registry or just dropped in to the startup folder on the start menu.

I'm not going to tell you where to get one as they are very dodgy pieces of software I consider it wrong to spy on what people type, I can't actually come up with a valid reason to use a key logger.

To spy on what your kids type?

Why bother commenting if you are not going to help. There is only something dogey if it is used in a dogey way but if someone wanted to do this they would soon get caught if they had to resort to asking what to use on this forum.

Responsible parents monitoring their kids? Business machines, secure server consoles... the list goes on, and with the right warning, it can be applied to all open access and public machines.

'Warning, all activity will be monitored while using this machine', don't like it? don't use it. I have seen and been involved in the application of numerous uses for it over the years.

PS, if it is to monitor your kids, PC Tattletale is supposed to be quite good and has a trial version. http://www.pctattletale.com/

Yes, they can be used for 'dodgey' stuff, but can't a webcam, voice recorder, video camera, baseball bat, golf club... the list goes on again.

I can't actually come up with a valid reason to use a key logger.

I am an ICT Tech'. I actually have one on my own machine. When I get locked out of a website for (allegedly) inputting my username and/or password incorrectly, I can check what I typed. It is usually, but not always, my fault.

You can also get them to take screen shots of what they are looking at.

But if you do use one of these a virus scan should pick it up unless you tag it as safe.

OK I get slated for making statements, are we just suposed to beleive that everyone is out to do a good thing.

So you want to see what your kid is typeing in to msn messenger? turn the logging on, you get both sides of the converstion where with a key logger you just get 1 side.

Wonga, if the OP is a network admin and requires it to chek on his server he should have some knowledge and know where to get such software not be asking on a forum for help.

Mr Leak uses one, just incase he makes a mistake entering a password, a bit OTT in my view (but hey what does that matter?)

And as BritBrat ponts out most security breach software is picked up by antivirus software anyway so the user will know about it soon.

Check out astalavista.com you will find all you need to spy on people, port scanning tools, wireless hacking tools, password crackers and software that will scan for security leaks and breaches in networks. knock yourself out. i will get my sister to make you a cake with a file in it when you get caught.

Just remember that with keyloggers come another layer of insecurity - ie storing passwords etc. Tbh John is fairly accurate in saying that there are very few above board uses for a keylogger.

Thank you for all the great advice and direction. I am still unsure what to do, I have looked at the one Wonga suggested, are there any others that are free to download? I am so not computer minded so could appreciate some further direction and specifics :D

    Thank you :)

I've no idea whats on the market, but I'd recommend getting one that encrypts the log. Its not something you want lying around your PC.

Personally, I wouldn't place much trust in the companies that develop these tools and I'd certainly ignore the idiot who suggested astalavista. They're not difficult to make if you know any IT bods who will help you out, however some may be reluctant to help unless you tell them what its for.. as you've already been told, a tool like this can be incredibly invasive if used inappropriately.
