Befuddled by EDF
Moved into a flat at beginning of August, phoned EDF that week to set up a new account and give meter readings, but quite confused as to everything that's happened since.
1. The paperwork that arrived a week after I called said "welcome, give us a call to set up an account", which I had done. I called EDF back and they said an account had actually been set up and I was on a price promise plan, so all was ok.
2. A week ago a direct debit went out of my account to EDF. I had set this up, but hadn't, and still haven't, received any more paperwork from EDF with regards to direct debit confirmation, or confirmation of the price plan, or anything. (Was tempted to call bank and get that refunded on principle because EDF had not given me any indication of when the direct debit was going to be taken, but decided there was little point).
3. I checked the details of their prices for my 'current' (I think) plan and the deemed plan I was originally told I was on before the new account was set up with a price promise plan. They said on the phone, and the internet confirms, that the deemed plan is an expensive standard tariff. However, the price promise until November 2014 is actually more expensive than their current deemed tariff for the south west.
Anyone have any ideas what is going on?

Points 1 & 2, just sound like time delays in setting up your account, it has only been 4 weeks since you signed up with them, personally I wouldn't be too concerned about those events.
Point 3 - sounds like you are on a fixed price tariff. The price may be higher now, but it will be fixed until November 2014, so if there are any prices increases to the tariff you were comparing with, this won't affect your tariff.
You pay more now, but in theory with prices rises, you should be paying less in the long run.0 -
just a hunch but i wonder if he is comparing the prices directly ie (including vat compared to including vat), as the bills show the prices without vat and prices give to him would show including vat.0

1. This sounds like a letter created before you contacted EDF
2. EDF normally send you details by email if you've provided one. Perhaps this has ended up in your spam folder? Do you have EDF online access? If so, you should find a copy of the letter there too.
3. Are you on a fixed tariff? You may wellnbe paying a premium today to fix your prices until November 2014 compared with todays variable rate tariffs.
Consult a comparison site to find the best deal for you. The advantage of EDF at present is there are no early exit fees

The thing is that they didn't know my name, or that there was a new tenancy, until I called them. That's the reason why I don't understand the first letter from them. It must have been sent after I called and set up a new account.
No emails have come through, and there's nothing in the spam folder.
I'm on economy 7 price fix until november next year, and the comparison searches only reveal a saving of £20 for the year (by going to an unfixed tariff which could/probably will rise) so I didn't want the bother. The main issue is that I'm sure the guy told me on the phone that the deemed tariff was a lot more expensive than all their other tariffs. He also said that the price fix was cheaper than the standard at the time (confirmed by comparison searches). I might send a letter asking for an explanation.0 -

The LL may have provided the supplier with your name, but he would not be permitted to set up an account for you.
Yes, I suggest you ask the supplier for an explanation as to how they advised you of the DD and the alleged price differences.
If the fixed price tariff was cheaper than the standard, and confirmed by a comparison site, how come it's more expensive today? I don't remember EDF reducing the price ofd their standrad tariff anytime recently
All sounds a bit Corporal Jones to me ... :cool:0
