Edinburgh Festival - where to stay?

I'm looking for somewhere to stay during the Fringe, early August, for about a week. So far the cheapest I've found is a one bed flat for about £400.
I currently pay £250 a month rent where I live, so £400 for a week seems a bit pricey.
Any decent youth hostels I could maybe try as an alternative? I will be coming up with my boyfriend, so am looking for a private room for the two of us, rather than a bed in a dorm.
Really, am just looking for somewhere clean and safe to crash. Cooking facilities (ie. self catered) would be a bonus. Any suggestions...? I feel like I've left it too late, and it's only June.

Even a caravan will cost you £5/600 + pw!
Your best hope is stay outwith the city, ie East or West Lothian or Fife and train/bus it0 -
prices are crazy during the festival. agree with budgetflyer, you're best bet would be outside the cityx x x0

Try these

once stayed in south queensferry as it was the closest place where I could find a cheap hotel, it was a disaster last train back was about 11.30pm and it was about £25 for a taxi so don't be tempted to stay too far out.0 -
Your best bet would be the uni accommodation that are run as summer hostels.
The SYHA have this one:
http://www.syha.org.uk/SYHA/Web/Site/Hostels/EdinburghMetro.asp
give them a ring as their online booking will say that they are full if one of the days you want is unavailable; in practice they may be able to juggle rooms to sort a room for you.
Alternatively there is this place:

This is where I tend to stay as it's in a quiet area and has some parking spaces which are rare in Edinburgh.
Both these are about a ten minute walk to the Teviot area which is where you'll find many of the fringe venues.
These places will offer single rooms for about £25 a night - if you plan on both staying in a single it would be a case of one of you checking in and collecting the keys as you're not supposed to overcrowd the rooms but they leave you alone once you're checked in so two in a single room is possible.0 -
Try the universities.
Failing that start looking further afield at places like Musselburgh that are still within Edinburgh but are a bit further out so don't get booked immediately.
After that try Glasgow0 -
go to

click on message boards, accommodation available and you will see posts mostly from locals renting out their spare room/whole flat etc0 -
Glasgow is a good shout.
Trains run every 15 minutes and it takes 50 minutes from the heart of Glasgow to the heart of Edinburgh. Depending on what venue(s) you are going to then you can always get off at Haymarket (station before Waverly)We all evolve - get on with it0 -
I've been to the festival twice and stayed at Euro Hostels.
The accomodation they use are university halls of residence and so are only available during the summer months.
They are right in the very centre of Edinburgh so you won't have to spend any money on taxis or buses.
They are comprised of little 'flats' with four bedrooms sharing a kitchen (with all crockery, saucepans etc included) and bathroom, plus there's a tesco nearby so you can eat very cheaply and save all your money for the entertainment!
I've checked the website and this year prices seem to start at 19.95 per person per night, but bear in mind that these are student accomodation the rest of the year so facilities are basic:- single beds, in need of decoration etc.
But the central location and the money you will save on eating out makes the basic facilities worth it in my opinion.
here's a link to their website:-

Enjoy the festival, there's so much going on you're bound to have a brilliant time!0
