Masters Isle of man?

My girlfriend is graduating with her degree in criminology this year and is going to do a part time masters for the nest 2 years. She cant do a full time (1year) masters as the university doesnt do a 1 year course becuase of the lack of masters staff. (shes at UCLAN by the way)

Unfortunately shes from the isle of man which i sure someone people this is a lovely place! However being from IOM means you dont get a student loan and your classed as a forign student. and the IOM government wont pay for a part time course.

So basically she only gets what she can earn while doing a Part time course. out of that she has to pay for food, rent, tuition fees, gas, electricity, water, and money for other necessities such as having a social life and toiletrys.

Basically what i was hoping some of you can help me with is what can she do to get extra funding. Can she get any beniffits. Hardship fund? or anything else i dont know about?

cheers:confused:

Has she thought about another uni with a full time course? Or maybe as its a part time course get a job part time?
  • shes going to get a part time job but like i said above. with hours for studying and lectures she can probably only work 3-4 days which she cant earn enough in to pay rent and tuitions fees and general living expenses.

also she doesnt want to go to another uni. after doing a masters here and knowing the staff well she wants to stay put. plus we have put down some roots here im also a student at this uni

There isn't really any funding for MA courses, regardless of where you come from. You generally can't claim benefits when you're a student (although the rules may be different if you're part-time, it might be worthwhile ringing your local council). The only thing I can suggest, beyond her getting a job, is for your girlfriend to look at getting a Career Development Loan (there's a thread on these somewhere). Her uni will have a Hardship fund so it's worthwhile her looking at that, but I don't think that they give you regular payments - I think it tends to be one off 'emergency' funds.

Beyond that, maybe your girlfriend could look at perhaps working full-time for a year or so to bulid up some savings or at least enough to pay the fees, and then going back to do the MA. Or, is there any way she can reduce her outgoings, like rent?
