Hire Car Insurance
I recently helped a friend out who was doing the 'Three Peaks Challange'. I said I'd help by driving them to avoid one of them falling asleep at the wheel.
Everything was sorted between those participating and i just turned up and drove.
Since we have been back we have recieved notification that i was caught speeding. Shouldnt have done it but one of those things.
AVIS (car hire) claim they didnt have me as a named driver, the person who organised the car hire (who i met for the first time on the trip) claims he added me as a driver and should have been covered.
This was either an administrative error by AVIS or an oversight by the friend of a friend. I was stood outside the little hut whilst it was organised, i had my licence on me but cant recall if it was provided or not...
Best case scenario is I get an SP30, which is fair enough.
However I'm very worried that the system is rigid and doesn’t really allow for special cases. Am I going to get an IN10 (driving without insurance) through no fault of my own which at best will push my insurance premium sky high, if I can get insurance cover at all?
Any advice? I was just trying to be helpful and it looks like its going to cost me dearly.
Thanks

You would of been required to sign the rental agreement to be added into the contract. If you didn't do this or produce your licence (which Avis would of insisted on) at the start of the hire, then you would not of been covered by Avis's insurance or have their consent to drive the car.
All you can do at this stage is comply with the speeding ticket and pay it. As you say, best case scenario is that is all what will happen. As the police were not directly involved, they may not discover that you should'nt of been driving. However, the original notification would of gone to Avis who would of named the hirer as the driver. From that the police MAY put 2 and 2 together. All you can do is wait and see what happens.PLEASE NOTEMy advice should be used as guidance only. You should always obtain face to face professional advice before taking any action.0
