I suspect you are being charged as you don't have an alternative date, you have simply told them to cancel!
I had to change the date for my move twice, each time I did so I provisionally booked the next date on which we hoped to complete, I was not charged a fee for this. I had paid a 10% deposit when "provisionally" booking the move, and kept the removal firm fully informed every step of the way, they couldn't have been more helpful and in the end I had 36 hours between exchange and completion for them to both pack and move everything, and there was a LOT to move!

That is one of the main risks of having Exchange & Completion on the same day. Its an all or nothing situation and you put yourself at that risk.. its best saved for where no chain is in place..

With my last move when 1st attempt was cancelled I had a hire van sat on drive waiting to be loaded up.. needless to say second booking wasnt made until exchange had been confirmed - and I had someone to pursue if it didnt happen on time..

If you have a couple of days in between then you can make such arrangements..
but exchange and completion often take place on the same day or within only a few days.. so the alternative is to ring a removal company and say, 'hello, will you move me this afternoon/tomorrow please?' is it?
  • I think some posters are not even bothering too read your posts. Penciling a date in, is not the same as confirming booking, and if no mention of a fee was mentioned, and also the fact you just mentioned that it was a tentative booking, means you should not have to pay anything. That was your verbal contract.
Sod t & c's, they are often long winded and complicated and contradictory.
I have won many a dispute because the t &cs were not obvious or clear or even not mentioned, I even was send t & c's in an email after an online payment for services was made, the company mentioned they are clearly on their website. Not good enough, they can't assume you have read their website, I had to cancel, they admitted they had to give me my money back.

Yes. Wouldn't the world be a better place if we all did that for every transaction!

OP - you changed your date. You cancelled.

I'm sorry you feel 'seasoned posters' are simply 'jumping on this' (whatever that means).

As a 'seasoned poster' I often advise people to fight their corner (when they are morally/legally in the right) and often advise them to back down (when they are morally/legally in the wrong.)

Yes lets force anyone who wants a legitimate invoice to be paid to have to go to court to get the money. That way all their other customers can fork out higher prices to cover their increased debt collection costs.
