I have indeed thank you, hence why I am again contacting HMRC. As I said, I believe it to be a duplicate. Neither JCP nor HMRC agree with me, both stating I'm owed the money. I am not. I paid £543.80 tax, I've been refunded £543.80 tax, I shouldn't be refunded it twice.

But HMRC will not accept the cheque back and JCP say it is nothing to do with them.
  • UPDATE: I spoke with HMRC again. Again they stated that they had no proof that JCP had refunded the £543.80 and that if I cashed the cheque it would be very unlikely that HMRC would seek a return of the money.

This did not sit well with me. I returned the cheque with a detailed covering letter. I really could do with this money, BUT honesty and a clear conscience won through.

Thank you all for your help and guidance.

Hi Rupieroo, I know you have sent the cheque back with a covering letter. I would say however, if anything like this happens to anyone, I would strongly advise that even if they phone that they always write to the appropriate department who sends the original letter, cheque or other.

The reasons I say this is that if anything crops up in the future - you have written proof of what you are told. Speaking to a person in that department over the phone would be useless if anything happens in future as you have no proof of what you are told!

If you need to speak to someone you should always ask for their name, but following any phonecall regarding these matters you really need to write a letter. Any correspondence should be kept for future reference as you never know when it may be needed.
