photo ID / best way to prove son's age

My son is heading off to university for his second year. He has an active social life and carries his passport or driving licence with him to prove his age when he wants to get into bars, clubs, buy alcohol or see age-restricted movies.

Problem is he's a bit of a scatter brain and last year he lost his passport (£80) and 2 driving licences (2 @ £50)! Not to mention the risk of ID theft.

Does anyone know of any pocket-sized lower-cost forms of ID that are accepted by retailers of age-restricted products & services?

Thanks in advance.

Some retailers and such can be pretty funny about what cards they accept.

also, even when they accept other cards, the cashier working might not recognise it as a valid card and could still refuse.

generally anything with the official pass logo should be accepted at most places
  • Thanks guys. This PASS scheme looks like what I'm after...

The application fee for Citizen Card is £13 which looks pretty good. Most of the other PASS card issuers seem to charge about £15.

I've subsequently been told that there's another one called Civilian Card which is available free of charge. Most of my son's friends seem to have decided to give that one a go now.
  • A lot of bars and clubs will only accept passports and driving licenses unfortunately. It's a pain!

Perhaps when he's paying to replace them out of his own income as he'll be away from home - the problem will solve itself. My son seemed to lose everything until he got his student grant and once he'd paid out to replace something valuable once .......he got very careful . Amazing how they suddenly get responsible once they get a taste of consequence and we don't bale em out (no matter how much we want to LOL)

How is he losing his licence? Is he losing his whole wallet?? Also a lost photocard licence is £20 so I'm not sure what the point of the extra ID card is really. He would need to pay to replace that too presumably so it's not really a saving. It probably won't be accepted at a lot of clubs. Because there are so many types, club staff don't know how to tell if a card provider really has verified the age or just printed a card out.... A lot of places will only take drivers licence or passport.
