Might be worth keeping an eye out for travel lodge offers (the £20 room deal or whatever it is lol) or if you are prepared to take a chance and wait have a look on late rooms.0

The Travelodge at Atlantic wharf is beside the Dr Who exhibition with parking. We stayed there a couple of years ago and it was a really nice clean hotel with a good breakfast. It has nice restaurants near the bay and you can do a boat trip across the bay. The centre nearby has shows on. I also was unfortunate enough to stay at the Hemel Hempsted TL before an early morning meeting but the hotel at Atlantic Wharf was a fairly new one that was clean and well maintained. We got the hotel for £10 a night during the school half term holidays.
It has good reviews here:

The Doctor Who was excellent by the way and the area around the TL features in Dr Who and Torchwood. The 1950s diner that features in an episode is a few minutes walk from the hotel. You also have bowling and a cinema on the same complex as the Dr Who exhibition.0 -
Future Inn in the bay often has good rates. Family rooms, much better than travelodge IMO. Big free car park too and plenty else o do0

We have stayed in the Premier Inn several times with the kids and had it at £19 and £29 a night. We have also stayed with the kids at the holiday inn.0

That was the old exhibition, there is now a new exhibition in its own building just before the barrage. Hotels in the bay aren't cheap, but there are occasional deals. The city centre travel lodge is ok, and there's a holiday inn Express too. There's a sleep hotel and various other budget offers. Obviously there are the higher end such as st David's hotel and spa, Marriott Cardiff, park plaza etc. what sort of budget are you looking at?"I AM DEATH, NOT TAXES. My son used to be obsessed with Dr Who and we`ve been to Cardiff several times. have stayed at Novotel Cardiff Central which does family rooms and had a games console and computers to use for free in lobby and a swimming pool, both of which my son enjoyed.
It`s within walking distance of city centre and Cardiff Bay area.0
