Cheap to run car

Hi

We currently have a Peugeot 307 which we are finding very expensive to run - both petrol and tax and insurance.

We probaly wont get very much for it but feel that changing it will outweigh the long term costs.

I have tried to research cheaper cars and have come up with Skodas, which is fine, but any advise on other second hand cars that have a good mpg and low tax and insurance, bearing in mind we probably only have about £3000 to spend! Thanks

Easy. Keep the £3k in the bank and keep the car you have till it runs no more, you can't really spend money to save money on a car.

How much will the Skoda save you? Per week or per mile?

A couple of pennies per mile? So you need to do a LOT of miles before it has a chance of saving you money.

Because its a lower insurance group doesnt mean its actually cheaper to insure.
Years back i could insure a group 16 -18 car for less than a group 13 car, 20 group system.

If you really want to save money, and aren't arsed about looking good, do what I've done and spend £300 on an old Skoda Felicia, yeah, it might drink a little more than the pug, but you'll save on the outlay. Make friends with a backstreet welder/spanner handler and keep £2700 in your pocket. It'll take a lot of miles to save that in mpgs.
Yes it's overwhelming, but what else can we do?

Toyota Yaris. Costs peanuts to run and won't go wrong.

I'm with this ^^ you can't save money by buying another car.

Couple that with the fact that most people do exactly what your intent on doing, which means any car you buy has probably been sold because it was costing too much.

At the £3000 I don't really believe that. Maybe sub 1.5k.

I'd go for a seat arosa 1.4tdi if big enough for your needs. group 4 insurance £30 tax and a genuine 73mpg or 55mpg around town. try to buy the best lowest millage one you can find for your money. you will never regret buying it. very nippy and fun to own and absolutely bulletproof , and because of their rarerity they hold their value

Fiat Panda 1.1, slow but really fuel efficient and cheap but you may have to buy second hand for that price (newish though can probably pick up a 11-12 plate).

I agree with the previous posts. If this is a pure money saving exercise you need work out how much the fuel and tax savings you are making over the next X years vs spending 3K. (Assuming this is additional money). 3K buys a fair amount fuel and tax.

The difference in total fuel costs between a car that does, say, 35 mpg and 50mpg over 10,000 miles a year maybe smaller than you think. Particularly if the 35 mpg car is a petrol, and the 50mpg car a diesel. £1753.49 for the petrol car, £1272.91 for the diesel. That's less than £500 a year, or £40 per month. Then you have the possibility of greater maintenance costs on a diesel.
