Paying off final bill between 2

Hi, just after some advice about paying a final Electric bill from a property I moved out of.
There's 2 names on the bill (mine and last flatmate), and basically I've been footing the bill myself paying it back £50 a month so far and the final bill was for £260 (great of British gas to have an accurate DD). So far I've paid 60 and the 50 will come out later this month.
Basically what I'm asking is: Can I get british gas to send him half the bill? I can pretty much see/tell I won't be getting this money despite the constant chasing up and replies from him "I'll pay it tonight."
I have his new address, and even his parents. What's the likely hood if after I pay my half and cancel my DD and call up british gas and say I've paid my half of the bill, send it here to get the rest?
Thanks in advance.

I think you are "jointly and severally liable" which means they will still come after you.0

BG will come after you still. If you have reasonable proof that he is liable for part of the outstanding bill then send him a letter before action stating that unless £xxx is received before ... at least 14 days .... you will commence legal action for that amount plus court fees and costs.0

I have original rental copies that binds us both to the property, is that the sort of document needed?
Also with regards to sending the letter to him, should I wait for the whole bill to be paid or just go straight for the whole amount?
I'm completely new to all this!
To be honest my original plan was to call up BG with my new address and actually give his current and just cancel the DD.0 -
The likely consequence is that he does not pay and your credit record is trashed as well as his.adamski789 wrote: »
