Confused on roundabouts

  • The OP is a little confusing, would have been better to write left or right lane.

In most cases then approaching roundabout in the right hand lane would be correct, using RH indicator till at the third exit by which time you should be moving over to the left lane just after you start indicating left.

Its not always so simple though, if the route you are taking is the main route (such as some by passes) and is dualled then both lanes could be correct, but in such cases it would be correct to enter in either lane (using appropriate indicators) and exit in the same lane, often the 4th exit is at one o'clock not a right turn as such.

As the poster above requests, a link to the roundabout in question informing of chosen route would elicit better replies.

Generally it would be helpful to all and help alleviate congestion if people used indicators on roundabouts, i've stopped taking my crystal ball with me to guess where people are going, if you want to turn right without indicating don't be surprised if an artic going straight on from the opposite direction stops you.

Follow the lane markings, a roundabout like that must have them.

There is a roundabout near me that has 5 exits, no lane markings and exits are very close together so giving a similar problem to op, having said that If i was exiting at exit 4 it would always be right hand side of rd (no lanes)entering and moving across at exit 3 to exit at 4

the one most people have problems with is from heartsease lane and exiting on to harvey lane

the plumstead rd and harvey lane entrances to roundabout are not an issue as there is only room for one car to enter but the other 2 have space for 2 cars side by side and as you can see NO lane markings.

bear in mind it is a small roundabout with exits very close together and is always busy as it is on the Norwich ring road

There is a real problem with roundabouts now that the OP has highlighted. No-one gives a sheet about others. It seems to be the ME! ME! ME! society we live in and that all that matters is ME!

For instance on a standard 4 way roundabout (assuming 2 car width and no direction markings) 50% of drivers seem to think that the correct lane for going straight ahead is lane 2, when lane 1 is the norm and is empty. Most drivers will drive straight ahead rather than follow the curve of the roundabout and this cuts up other drivers.

Then there are those who are just grossly stupid and arrogant. For instance we have a roundabout near us and the correct lane for the 3 o'clock exit is lane 1. Yet half the drivers ignore the lane markings and cut across three marked lanes. It's not rocket science just that half of people need to be hit with these new £100 fines before they start taking notice.

    Are you also using indicators?

Always but I'm not sure anyone else can see them (or perhaps they're not looking )

don't start me ranting about my 2nd issue, people who don't know the significance of indicating/not). :rotfl:

Maybe in order to regain confidence, the OP could simply book a driving instructor for one hour to brush up on things that are causing confusion?

Its not uncommon for people to do this and making drivers more confident makes the roads safer for all of us.

If you own a VW or Audi then its highly possible that many people really can't see the silly little things some of their models are fitted with, drowned into insignificance by the blinding stop lights and absolutely invisible in the sun.

Can you pull up the round a bout on Google street view?
As said above it depends on the markings and sign age. Assuming it is similar to similar round a bouts near me it would be the right hand lane to enter, about the middle lane half way round and the left lane as you exit. The lane markings will guide you round in that position.
  • Tell us what roundabouts and we will pull them up on Google Earth

  • The only answer has to be - it depends. It depends on what the other users are doing.
Too many people drive by rote. "It's a roundabout ahead - I must be in second gear". "It's T junction - I must stop for 10 seconds".

When their script doesn't work they are completely *"!!**.............

With roundabouts i do the following

If the cut off i need to take is after 12oclock on the sign and there are no road / lane markings to state otherwise you should be in the inside (right hand side lane), then indicate and turn off the roundabout from the inside lane as you approach your turn off.

If there are no road signs then gauge if the junction you need to take is after 12oclock from the give way section on the road you're joining the roundabout from.

These are only used though when other road markings or signs aren't in use^^
