May I ask what it was you complained about to get the leaving present?
I had a few, but the primary one was a guaranteed £10K limit credit card, which was then declined when I applied for it.
Is there a good resource somewhere on "playing the game"?
Use the forum search tool (top right of your screen) using...

    first direct
    leaving present
    customer service issue
    incentive
    reason
    etc
    etc

    ...in various combinations.

The offer has been around for many years so there's lots of information to be had from the search.

Do they still guarantee a £10k limit card for everyone? I certainly wouldn't be approved for one in my position, so that would be an easy complaint!

They never did. All offers are individually tailored.

But this was several years ago when credit was far easier to come by!

    This is utter rubbish.
Any reasonable explanation will be sufficient.
Their response might be "you knew that when you joined us".

You'd do much better to dream up, or actually have, some form of (ideally, unresolved) customer service issue.

Like you have done, albeit impolitely, I expressed an opinion.

I was very careful to use the word "might" when I expressed my opinion. I note, with interest, the use of the word "will" in yours.

Perhaps you work for FD? I don't by the way.

Complaining about something you knew about beforehand, e.g. having no branches etc. is hardly a reasonable explanation.

I don't work for HSBC but simply look at their language.

It is something along the lines of '£100 if you like us, £200 if you don't'. The only qualifier is trying them for 6+ months.

A hidden requirement, like you suggest, would be unenforceable and probably get them in trouble with the FCA.

Well the OP. Has to be approved a account before he can even think of leaving.
Given FD's standards. A student is not really the market they are aiming for.

Why would they turn me down? Surely it's not like a credit card where they can use your credit score to justify a rejection - it's just a normal current account.
