Low Income - Dental Treatment

Evening...

I'll try and be as straight forward as possible.

I've recently returned to work and have been getting free dental treatment and prescriptions.

On Tuesday, my hours will increase to 24 hours per week, with wages of around £150 per week plus WTC with Disability Premium and £40 back to work credit form DWP.

1. I saw my dentist last week and he has referred me to hospital for an extraction. As the referral was made before I had my hours/wages increased, will this be deemed as still ok to claim the free dental treatment?

2. As i'll be on a low wage, will I still get free dental treatment? I know I can get an HC1 form to find out, but in the meantime, how do I go about dental treatment as i'm due a checkup this week and they will want proof of my eligibility, if I am entitled to free dental treatment still.

If it makes any difference, I will get full HB and CTB for the next 4 weeks as a run on anyway....

Thanks.

If you are being referred to the hospital for treatment there it will be free. However, if you are attending the surgery you will have to pay. Housing benefit and basic child or working tax credit are not qualifying benefits. With regard to tax credits you must hold a little white NHS branded card which is a tax credit exemption certificate.

With regard to a low income you must complete an HC1 form to apply for the HC2 Low income scheme certificate. You should not claim free treatment until you have received the certificate. You should pay at the dentist and if you are subsequently granted the certificate you have a 3 month period in which you can claim a refund. To claim a refund you need to send off your receipt with an HC5 form which the surgery should stock.

Thanks for the info. I hope to find out soon if I am entitled to free dental treatment and will speak to my dental surgery at the same time.

After sending off an HC1 form, do they let you know pretty quickly?
  • Hi, long story short, we get WTC and CTC, because we are £200 over the threshold for NHS exemption certificate, the guy at tax credits told me to ring and apply for HC1, which I've just filled. Can anyone tell me how it works as I'm due a dentist appointment soon and will try and wait to see if I'm eligable for help. Thanks

What white card, the only white card I know is for medical exemption for prescriptions and that's different to hc1

I applied for hc1 and got notice quite quick but don't know if that's due to living near the office. I also asked for refund of charges and got that back as it was paid on my mams card.

There was a faf as we sent both off together and seems like the offices don't communicate because I had to send off hc1 to get refund despite already doing so.
If you have the medical exemption prescriptions they advise to reapply I got my doctor to tick which box as it didn't explain which one to tick. You pick up form from docs and doc has to sign for it. If your going for an appointment best to do that then because I inowyou have to wait a few days for doctors to sign things.

  • As I get WTC with disability premium I get the medical exemption for dental & optical. OP you mentioned that you get disability premium as well so check if you qualify - you can look on NHS Choices as they give a list of who is and isn't included. As I'm diabetic I already get free prescriptions - the only good thing about diabetes!
